Heating an unheated room in low temperatures

I live in New England, where the winters get very, very cold, down past freezing. I have this room that's decent sized and I'd like to grow plants (cactus, salvia, cappi, to name a few) in there but it needs to have warmth for this to work year round. I was thinking maybe a high powered HPS light and some portable heaters, plus adding some insulation. Any other suggestions? I'd really like to make this my grow room.

you would be surprised how much a hps light will heat a room, i live right near you on the ct /mass border and in my basement it gets cold, but with my hps running for 18 hours it keeps my basement around 70 in the winter :-)

i make sure the off time for the light is right in the middle of the day when it is at its warmest, also if you were to add insulation to the room it would help alot with the light.

Nice insulation is a must for walls and plastic for the windows (plastic on the windows will help a lot itself). If you threw in a couple electric heaters you might be good to go. Kerosene heaters throw out some pretty serious heat (if its a big room) but would be a bitch to have running all winter.

Those new england winters are rough my dad lives in NH, it def. gets bone chillingly cold up there haha.

my cacti live in an unheated room, the HPS & ballast alone keep it nice and cosy... around 18c when the light is off and 30c+ when the light is on :yesnod:

the winters arent exactly tropical here either, so i doubt u will need additional heating...

like royer said, having the light on at night when its coldest is a good idea also...

One more question: My floor is just boarded, not covered with anything and beneath it is an unheated basement. Would covering it with a large rubber mat help, do you think? That's the only way I could insulate that floor unless there are other options.

a mat on top would help...
or u could insulate between the floor joists and board the ceiling below... that would require alot more effort of course...
