Grow temperature
    #5710985 - 06/04/06 12:22 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

A friend of mine recently set up a grow in a small closet. He originally had a 400 watt hps light but that burned all his plants and stopped their growth. It was like 35 degress celcius in his room. He then switched to florescent lights while he installed 2 small fans and bought a smaller light (250 watt hps). He installed the new light and the temperature was at a steady 29 degrees. The plants are on 18/6 so it is considerably colder at night (22 celcius).
Anyways his plants did very well on the florescents but because we've heard that those lights aren't going to produce the best of buds he wants to keep with the hps. The problem is even at 29 degrees the leaves are dieing and the ones that aren't dead look all shitty (yellowy green with visible veins inside the leaves). They are long overdue for flowering because of the first deliema (5 months and they're a little less than a foot).
Could the burning just be because of the shock of moving them from floros to hps? Is 29 degrees really too much for a plant that originated in India? What should my friend do? Theres only like 4 plants but it would be a shame to have to give up. He has the light raised as high as possible so nothing more can be done in that aspect.

i think they're called T-5 Ballasts? Anyways, do some searching through google and a bit on this site on fluro grows. You can achieve nice results using CFL's or these new fluro ballasts. The new ballasts are supposed to put out just as many lumens as an HID, but with no where near as much heat.

You need to drop the temp basically. There are a couple ways I know of to do this,

1. Get a really powerful squirrel cage fan to pull air out of the top of your area out to another part of your house.

2. "The Cool Sun XL by Sunlight Supply offers superior air-cooling through innovative design. Air passes easily through both ends of the reflector directly over the lamp for maximum inline air cooling. 8" air-cooled fittings are integrated into the design of the reflector – no need for separate fittings! A tempered glass lens is also included with every fixture. It features a 95% reflective aluminum insert that offers excellent reflectivity and diffusion properties. The rugged and durable electro-galvanized steel housing includes a socket assembly and lamp cord that are built into the reflector – no wiring required! The reflector is sealed, so it won’t draw air and CO2 from inside the room. White powder coating provides a rust resistant, clean appearance."

I recommend the second.

29 isn't that bad. There is a product called silica blast that will take care of the heat stress problem.
