My FIRST Oyster Project
    #9310540 -

I just have a few questions...

1. Is brf/verm ok? I was thinking WBS but it's not the right time of year.
2. Is a block (milk crate) or a log better?
3. I read newspaper gives nasty/no taste. What can I add? I was thiking, newspaper and straw... maybe some coffee?

Any other tips great! I plan on using my jumbo tub for providing FAE through a coolmist

1. BRF cakes will work, but your yields will be fairly low, even if you use it to spawn to bulk.  What do you mean by "not the right time of year" for WBS?
2. Either method is fine.  I've used milk crates before, but they tend to dry out on me faster than logs do.  Either will require frequent misting if you're fruiting outdoors our outside of your tub.
3. I'm really not sure about the newspaper thing, but the best quality oysters I've grown have been outdoors on burlap sacks filled with wood chips.  I used paper to bulk up my spawn before using it to inoculate the bags.  I've grown on paper and coffee before and noticed no unpleasant taste.

Other tips... uh... when you're trying to get ketchup out of a Heinz bottle, hold it at a 45 degree angle and tap the 57 repeatedly.

Whats the best spawn then? Its winten silly. No bird seed around here. Maybe Petsmart though. I didnt think about milk crates drying out faster, I wanted to try that because I already have some but I was leaning more towards logs.

No wonder my katsoup never comes out right. BTW your pic had always freaked me oot.

Most commercial growers use rye grain spawn or sawdust block spawn, but brf will work fine.  Logs in my experience do better than baskets.  Oysters grown from paper taste fine (you can add 5% wheat bran for a supplement), although most will say that grown off straw taste better and off hardwood logs taste best.  Just be sure to boil your paper for at least a half hour.  If you want to supplement straw or straw only you will need to pasteurize the straw separately.

Can I use WBS if I can find it? I planned to soak the straw in hot soapy water like RR does. I was going to then add coffee and pasteurize. I was reading something the other night that said they didnt even pasteurize.

You can use WBS.  Most seeds and grains will work just fine.  I've used rye, hard winter wheat, bird seed, rye grass seed, supplemented sawdust,  newspaper pellets, and a mixture of perlite or calcined earth and a pure nitrogen source (wheat bran, corn gluten meal, etc).

straw MUST be pasteurized.  paper can be used as is and just wetted or preferably boiled for 30+ minutes.

Wow there's birdseed all over here. If it was worth the shipping I'd help you out.

I am just starting some oysters myself.  I have some pf jars nearly colonized, which I planned to use as spawn for WBS or cardboard.  I know pf jars are useless alone, but will they really produce low yeilds even if spawned to something better?  I thought the sort of stepping up effect of desired nutrients would be good.
