Project
    #6798068 -

Hey I'm doing a project for school(senior=18yrs old). I'm trying to do something like effective recycling of organic wastes using mushrooms. I'm thinking of using oyster mushrooms(lemme know if you guys know a better edible mushroom for this). However all I can find that's a kitchen/family waste that oysters use are coffee rinds. There is also one more problem and that is I don't have anything to grow oysters from.
If this project isn't feasible then I was thinking of doing some myco filtration like Paul Stamen's talks about in Mycelium running.

I just wanted to get some feedback from you guys because you definitely have more experience.

Thanks again,
JP

P.S.
This is for AP Bio so it can't be a simple experiment design. It has to get into super details.

You can grow oysters on newspapers and phone books.

There are a lot of ways to tackle this. You can go into zero waste systems where different type of grower, processors, etc. all tie in together. Like Wheat growers - harvest the wheat for food, use the straw for mushroom growing, use the spent substrate for feeding to worms (vermiculture) to get the worm castings, and using the worm castings, and some composted spent mushroom substrate to grow seedlings of herb-type plants.

but that's probably to involved even for AP Bio:crazy2: If you do like it, look into ZERI (Google them).

You can look at the different types of waste that can be converted using oyster mushrooms (or reishi). You can grow them on peanut shells (You have a Roadhouse Grill near you?), used coffee grounds, sugarcane bagasse, rice straw, shredded office paper, newspapers, your AP Bio textbook (or an old one - that'll trip them out!). They grow well on LOTs of organic wastes.

PM me or we can have the conversation here in this thread, but I'm very interested in recycling of organic wastes.

Also the idea about Stamets biofiltering would probably be a kick ass project if you can figure out a way to test for results. maybe create a small micro environment that you can work in.

Keep us posted. We'll help you get that A.

JD

Get some cultures, not spores. I know of a few places I'd recommend, though some of them are not sponsors here, and you know how that goes.

But Sporeworks.com here is great. I've bought cultures from them before and always been pleased. I think most of their stuff is under $20, which is great.

Besides you're looking for inexpensive cultures - not cheap ones;)
