if i dont have any rubbing alcohol could i use hydrogen peroxide?

No. If you don't have alcohol, try heating the needle under a flame until it's red hot. Let it cool before using.

If it does, don't worry about it. It's only soot and won't harm anything.

While we're on the subject of needles, how long do you usually wait for the needle to cool down after it has been heated to red hot? In all the teks I've read it usually says "a couple of minutes" or "a few minutes" but I'm the kind of person who'll get excited unless I have an exact time. :crazy: 2 minutes? More?

Also, if you accidently stick the needle in while it's too hot is anything bad going to happen besides getting verm stuck to it? I'm guessing some of it could get stuck in the tip as well?

If the needle is too hot when you inoculate the jars, the spores will be killed. I think this is what caused my previous grow attempt to fail  :frown:

I usually squirt out a little bit to cool the needle off. Dipping it in alcohol after flame sterilizing cools it off fast if you do have it. Whatever you do, don't blow on it, it will defeat the whole purpose.

what if you didnt heat the needls to red hot just put it under the flame for a couple of seconds is that not enough

It should only take 10-20 seconds to get red hot. If it's red hot, then you know for sure nothing is left alive on there.
