The rains are back.  Hopefully we can stay frost free though the first few weeks of December.  My annual golf course hunt is going down the day after Thanksgiving.  I tell you, golf has benefits.  Go with your buddies, get all baked, and nobody knows what the hell you're doing at all.  The patches are untouched all season for the most part.

Very nice finds! Im not sure if its only if you eat pizza a few hrs before you trip, or if you eat pizza and shrooms at the same time, but it always ruins my trip, either takes a lot longer to kick in or doesnt really work at all. It happends to me and every one of my friends that eats pizza for lunch then shrooms later in the evening. Just for the heads up, but I bet if you eat them at the same time the pizza wouldnt hurt your trip nearly as much since everything is being absorbed at the same time...

Hey all,  just a note on the season in general and a few pics and questions.  I found quite a few cyans in the yard this season.....about 8 general patches that produced 4-6 flushes each.  Probably somewhere in the 200's for a rough count.  (Filled two quart jars with dried ones.

It was one hell of a learning experience and I want to thank the Alan and various contributers for helping me along the way.

This morning, I went out on rounds (I'm on 10 acres and these all grow within about 100-200 feet of my house) and discovered that all my mid-growth and ready to harvest had turned bluish black.

My question is......what should I do about it?  Should they be nipped and tossed or left alone?  Are they still viable?

Weather suggests there might be a little life left in the season, and some pinning is still active underneath the maple leaf litter that has blown back into the prickers.

I've had a blast finding productive areas and "gardening".

A few things I learned, that may be of interest.....

When tunneling through blackberries/prickers to find 'em, try to approach from the north and leave as much canopy as possible.

These guys will grow just about anywhere, but you have to invest a great deal of time either picking leaves or just squatting and staring into the underbrush.....I've spent 20 minutes crouched in a spot; pretty sure I'd located them all.....then find more within inches of my feet.

(This is all in relation to wild cyan.....I've no experience with urban or woodchip patches, but these guys will grow off of twigs, logs (especially under them) or any amendment they randomly land on.)

A beautiful little patch (shown in pics) popped up in a tuft of grass and they all grew as bonzai cyans....never more than an inch or two tall at maturity.  They were the most fun to cultivate.

Is this a good time of year to sporulate?  I've dried everything on paper towels that are now dense with spores and I've created beds in their happy spots with decaying alder from surrounding trees.  Is it ok to dust those spots now, or is there a better time?

Thanks again, and vishnu bless the pnw for its bounty....or god....or me for that matter.

'til next.......

Yes, the best time to drop spores all over is when the mushrooms fruit because that is when they want their spores dropped.

One post note......if you are looking to regenerate or prolong a patch, it may help to (after picking mature samples) blow on them for a few times over the patch.

Initially, I'd just tap 'em a bit, but if you put a finger on the cap, you can give it a powerful puff from underneath (with little ill effect to the shroom) and release more spores.

May be old news, but I figured I'd toss it in.

I just take all the gill chunks and pieces of crappy caps with spores all over them and spread them all around in wood chips along with some mycelium.

I kind of doubt that releases many spores but I have been wrong before.

But if there is a patch there then myc is already growing and spores are not really needed.  I think a better strategy is to carry some sawdust or wood chips with you when you pick, and jam the saw dust / wood chips into the ground in or right next to the areas you removed mushrooms from.

What the patches really need is more food, not more spores.

Its also a real good idea to dump a bunch of fresh wood chips on the patch at the end of the season.

Again with the "stop looking and you will find them" magic!

Today I scoured the area near Newport, OR.  Since the dune grasses have had nothing for me, I have started to focus more on landscaped areas.  I found very promising patches around churches and some government offices.  Alas, nothing.

So on my way home, I picked up a hitch-hiker who is coincidentally residing in a trailer owned by the guy who built my house, about 3 miles down my road.  I asked him if he had noticed the people hunting liberty caps in the meadow haflway to town, he said "Oh yeah, its a hotspot.  I have heard they come from Eugene even" [which is a couple hours drive].

Then I dropped him off, and in front of his trailer on a pile of woodchips next to a greenhouse were hundreds of cyan pins.  I asked if he knew about these, and he said "just a sec" and grabbed a half-gallon jar of dried fruits.  "Want some?"

I am still disappointed I haven't found them in the "wild" while I have been looking for them, but hey!  Cyans grow on my street!
