All of those brainless muppets have zero understanding of monetary policy and real economics.  They are brainwashed clowns with overinflated egos.  You can actually see them starting to panic.

Bringing back the gold standard would fix the economy and shrink the government.

Inflation is not necessary!  It is the most insidious form of thievery the oxygen thieves have ever contrived!!!

The gains were not real.  They were the result of an economy borrowing on credit gone out of control.  Ditto with the housing market.  The U.S. economy is a proverbial "house of cards".....

To elaborate, the housing market became artificially blown up due to the government enforced sub-prime mortgage fiasco.

Don't let the muppets fool you!!!  The market is not to blame, it's government regulation!!!'

The bubble burst and the morons refuse to allow the market to adjust!!!

What would be so bad about housing values adjusting and becoming affordable???

Sunspot activity has also greatly diminished since the election of Obama although the downwards trend was well established by then.

Probably just a coincidence.

I can't possibly believe that Phred believes this downturn is due to the election of Obama. That is a monumental feat of stupidity and I don't believe it would be fair to attribute to him.

We had a real gold or bimetallic standard during the 1873 "long" depression, the 1893 depression, the 1929 "great" depression. After moving to a fake gold, and finally pure fiat system, we've gone well over half a century without a depression. We might be heading into one now, but the jury's still out and I doubt it.

The fact is, economic life has been much smoother and easier using paper money than it ever was with metallic money.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panic_of_1873

Looks like the cause of that depression was mostly related to two booms - civil war production & railroads and later, logging to rebuild everything that  all of the great fires destroyed.

I wouldn't fully blame the gold standard for it ( even though there was a panic created by some people trying to corner the market on it.) That seems to be able to happen with fiat currency to, as we are now witnessing.

The gold standard just makes it harder for people and governments to spend beyond their means with a fixed supply of credit. Thats why I like the idea of competing U.S. currencies in play.

Boobs create busts. It seems as booms are being created, no one is looking ahead planning for the down cycle of it to come when the high demand will inevitably cease.

We need more economist studying the nature of booms and busts.

Yeah, I'm not trying to blame those crises on the gold standard, I'm just pointing out that we used to have a gold standard and the world wasn't all peachy.

Thank you. I'm amazed at how many people think that the gold standard is the obvious solution to all our economic problems. I say, if it's so obvious, why aren't we still on it?

The typical answer given goes down the conspiracy road with the bankers wanting to keep everybody in debt, creating an economy that is dependent upon debt in order to function.

Personally, I have no problem with us being away from the gold standard.  However, I would like to see competing currency legal in the US and I would like to see the bankers removed from the position of regulating the financial industry.  If the government isn't smart enough to do it, then put a bunch of economists together or something of that nature.

It seems like we're agreeing more often now that the election is over

My problem with the election was the otards that refused to acknowledge that their blessed candidate wasn't the next coming of Jesus.  I'm going to have a lot of fun over the next four years pointing this fact out again and again.  (Who knows, maybe we will be lucky and I am wrong; however, Hillary in his cabinet doesn't jive with the "change" bit he was pushing.)

Back on topic...

Why would allowing a competing currency in the US be a bad thing?  (Certainly somebody has reasons against it.)

They'll be more likely to acknowledge it now. Obama doesn't need their support any longer; people can criticise things he does without sounding like they're supporting McCain.

And Bernanke is... an economist.
There's an inherent problem in regulation that only insiders to a system understand it well enough to regulate it - ordinary non-experts would fuck it up to no end.

Really? Who were those?
I remember several McCain supporters I know (here and elsewhere) harping endlessly on this point during the campaign, but I'm not sure where the meme came from - who's ever thought that Obama is anything other than a skillful politician? I've always thought this was a straw man...
