Cacti Identification & temperature questions.
    #9277428 -

Ok,I think I may have posted pics of these cacti, and asked for Id's a few months back, but I couldn't find where I did so.I need to know the exact species of these cacti,so I can do some research on their flowering, how long they take to pup,and the minimum low temps they can withstand. Also,I'm thinking of putting labels on all of them,so I'll always know what they are. Also,is my Barrel cactus a Golden Barrel,or another species?Another thing with the Barrel cactus is would it be wise to just leave it out all winter uncovered? It's going to be in the 30's tonight, and I wonder if it could withstand such a low temperature.Any tips, and Id's will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

In order:

Echinocactus grusonii, Cereus spp, Mammilaria spp (compressa?), Echinopsis subdenudata, the rest I´m not sure.

All cacti should be fine (if soil is dry) at least down to freezing.

Ok,cool Flelix,I'm going to get some labels on them asap.Anybody know what the others are? So,as long as the soils is dry,my Barrel will be fine, got ya.I haven't watered that thing in at least a month.Well,I'm going to look up the ones that Felix Identified, and find out a lil more about them.Anybody else fell free to ID the others thanks guys.WOW,I just read the my Barrel Cactus is critically endangered in the wild, and takes 20 years to flower! I've had mine for 3 years, and it has never flowered. So I guess it's not as old as I thought it was.I still can't find what type of cereus cactus I have, and I'm not sure the mamalaria is compressa.I'm looking at pics of compressa now,and it looks similar, but there are some differences in that one and mine.It also says that flowers are very rare in compressa, and my plant put out tons of flowers this year.

I didn´t know the Grusonii were so endangered! They´re some of the most expensive cacti in the market, specially when old. I also have one, I love it, its bigger than my head can´t remember how old it is but it was a baby when it arrived...

I believe the fifth cacti is a Cereus validus f. monstrose or a Cereus forbesii monstrose (they are the same thing kinda) wich is also called Cereus 'Ming Thing'

Yeah, they have a scale of how endangered a plant is from not endangered to extinct, and it is one more away from being extinct,no wonder they cost so much.Mine is as big as a basketball, and it was pretty big when i got it 3 years ago. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/4b/Status_iucn3.1_CR.svg/180px-Status_iucn3.1_CR.svg.png It really makes me sick that humans are wiping out every plant and animal in their paths.Cactus take far to long to grow, and flower in the wild,so they are the plants that suffer the most from habitat destruction.I think they need to make a lot of the deserts a wildlife refuge, and plant more endangered cacti on them to get the population back up.It wouldn't be hard at all to do,but I guess that's dream that will most certainly not come true.Oh,and fee, that's what that weird plant I have is called the Cereus mind thing.I couldn't remember that for the life of me.Thanks:thumbup:

i didn't realise that they were so rare in the wild either, i guess that explains why the basketball kinda sized ones i saw at the nursery were going for £50 each...
when they are lower on the scale than "threatened" that surely isn't a good sign

EDIT: you can check out the red list conservation status of species here

Awesome link uarewotueat,I've been looking up all kinds of cacti. It seems Lophophora Difussa is listed as threatened, but Williamsii isn't.It also list other plants, and animals as well.It really makes me sick to see such beautiful plants and animals fade away.

yeah i did the same search... williamsii isn't listed at all... perhaps because it is scheduled... for sure it is just as threatened as diffusa...

Difussa is legal except for in the state of California.California is the only state where all species of Lophophora are illegal.

nope, diffusa contains no mescaline so it is not scheduled.

actually Difussa contains Mescaline, but in smaller amounts than that of Williamsii.I still think if you got caught with a bunch of Difussa, you would still go to jail. The police can't tell the difference in Williamsii, and Difussa.Hell, without flowers I don't think I'd be able to tell most of the time.

i dunno man, i think it would be fairly easy to prove diffusa from williamsii... they are quite distinct to the trained eye :yesnod:

Yeah you said it,to the trained eye,but to an untrained cops eye, they wouldn't be able to tell. That's why I believe all species of Lophophora are illegal in California. It would be too easy to just say you were growing Difussa,or you thought you were growing Difussa, but if they make all species of Lophophora illegal, you would have no excuses:grin:

Regarding the different specie of lophophora, I would go to trial and watch the cops squirm over whats what. Fuck'em. It would be too late for DNA by that point. And how would a cop no what a loph looks like anyhow? I can't wait to get pulled over with a bag of kratom powder .

I can't believe that you guys are paying so much for lg Golden Barrels. That sucks.
