my friend is in the middle of doing a casing(hasn't started fruiting yet) and its been in the incubation chamber for about a week and he was wondering why casings dont get contaminated. it seems like a very sloppy unsterile process.

from his experience with cakes compared to so far with casings there seems to be a difference with the likelyhood of contamination. is it just that pete moss and vermiculate arent a susceptable to contam as substrate is?

By this time you have grown a strong and dominant culture that will fight off most contams . Besides you should be using sterilized casing , thus reducing the chances of contams during this phase . Good Luck

no my friend has grown it. the casing is sterilized. no contams yet. im wondering how long it takes to start growing shrooms. its been a week and it seems like the fuzzy mycelium has lost its fuzzyness. also the casing layer seems a bit dry. the terrarium isn't air tight because my friend left openings in the lid to reduce humidity it is being humidified with perlite and the humidity gauge says 91% but when it is air tight it is 99%. the terrarium is a cardboard box coated with a trashbag inside and the lid (if you want to call it that) is a trash bag held on with tape.

Give it time . But mist a little to keep casing moist (no puddles on surface ), if it gets to dry overlay may occur . Keep that humidity as constant as possible , and do not trust hygrometer is accurate , unless you have a high quality one . Cheap ones give just that .........cheap results . Close off those vents for now .

Is the casing getting much light? This is needed to initiate pinning.

1st timer.. when growing casings it is imperative to keep the casings at the proper moisture content for the first 5 days or so after birthing and exposing to light, you do this by misting with a fine mist. once the layer gets more than 60% colonized don't worry about it as much, but until that point the layer needs to stay as moist as it was from the moment you applied the casing layer over the substrate. after you pick the first flush re-apply another light casing layer and do the same thing over again after every flush.. just don't incubate and keep it exposed to light. if you do this, along with fanning 3 times a day you should be in great shape. 91% RH is good, just make sure it doesn't ever drop below 86 or so.

another thing, I give my casings light 24-7 during the first week or so after starting the pinning phase, this seems to get them going a little quicker.

its been getting light. my friend took the foil cover off of the casing after the 2nd day because the mycelium was already poking through to the surface. maybe he didnt make the casing layer thick enough. he was being pretty conservative, its only 1/2 inch thick.
i think im going to tell him to mist it lightly once a day. Is it too late to add more casing layer? also from what my friend has told me his experience with mycelium coming in contact with water is that it seems to die, its like the same thing as touching it with your finger and then the mycelium doesnt grow back.
