Geothermal

I was thinking tonight about geothermal...

It takes warm air from the earth and brings it too the cooler surface, where the air then gets cool and travels into the warm earth. Wont this cool the earth eventually?

No I dont think so, not by much at least.  The end result of using a temperature gradient for energy is the hot part gets a bit colder and the cold part get a bit hotter.  So the core may lose energy to the surface faster (just a guess).  Now most of the heat in the core is fueled by nuclear reactions, so the heat is constantly being supplied.  We can either use it as it transitions to the surface or not.

This is just a guess, I dont really know anything about it at all.  :lol:

Yeah, I'd imagine that whatever amount of energy we could extract from the periphery of the Earth's core is insignificant compared to the amount there.  Seeing as we can't actually drill all the way to the core anyway, all the heat we get from geothermal sources is from lava flows that have risen up to near the surface and would dissipate to the atmosphere relatively soon anyway.

As a side note, what if the interior of the Earth did cool significantly?  Is the interior of the moon molten?  What about Mars...?

No, I dont think the moon or mars have molten cores.  If our core cooled significantly we may lose our dynamo and our precious geo-magnetic field.  That would certainly suck, much worse than a few degrees of global warming.  But of course, there is no practical way to do that even if we wanted to (yet :stoned:).

I don't think the moon does either, but I'm just pulling that out of my ass, mainly because it's so small.  Mars, I'm not so sure about...  I guess that's still a fuzzy area of science as we don't even know the composition of our own planet definitively.

I just found a few interesting tid-bits on wikipedia:

Maybe the temperature change would be small but you agree there would be a change? Ive been thinking about new technologies lately and some of them seem to (in my mind) lead to where we are now.

The Earths core is always cooling.  No amount of human activity could speed up this process in any significant or even measurable amount.

Now I don't know if the Earths core will cool and solidify before the Sun dies and finishes it off.  But I'm not too worried that mankind will still be around to witness the event either way. :smirk:

What if we tap into and crack open so many sources, that the temperature and pressure in the core drops and the reactions producing the heat slow.  There must some point where that can happen... then human activity would effect it.  Of course if this indeed could happen, then it would probably be thousands of years from now. 

Thousands of years ago, man probably believed they could never cut down all the forests and now we can.  Thousands of years from now it may be that we can effect things on a grand scale that we cannot fathom today.

Not long ago we thought we could burn all the fossil fuels we wanted and not affect anything as big as the atmosphere. :shrug:
