Genocide in a metaphorical sense, jackass.

This nation is less then 5% of the population, yet we consume over 28% of the worlds energy, 27% of the worlds resources, all to support corportations who do nothing but destroy us, and strip us of our identity and choices, brainwashing us to train ourselves into slogan with the small sense of social status we have chosen

Seriously, I hate blind corporation hate.  Sure, there are manipulative corporations that are run by greed, but I'm willing to bet the decisions that most corporations make are generally fairly sensible and not at all evil.  Yes, when people make a lot of money, they wield a lot of power, and they can use that power to slant the democratic process and spread whatever information or misinformation they please.  But blaming corporations is just a cop out, like blaming the black or the jews.  I ran an LLC (limited liability corporation) for a while...  it was an internet cafe and I guarantee nothing offensive or subversive took place.  If something is going wrong in the world of business, people are to blame, not the company.

Notice my example with Toyota, and Speedo does the same thing in Pacific countries.

Another fun fact.  toyota builds all their tundras right here in San Antonio Texas, and it is a unionized factory as well.  I have friends who work their and LOVE their job...

And this is exactly the kind of blind corporation hate I was talking about.  First, why is it corporations fault that we are a consumer nation?  2nd, I don't think our energy use is a problem, just our energy generation methods.  There are plenty of clean ways to make energy, we just need to invest in them.  But it is not the fault of corporations that these energies are not profitable.  Government is failing us, and needs to level the playing field so that clean, more expensive forms of energy can compete in the marketplace until they are profitable on their own.  There is no reason that other countries can't all use just as much energy as we do, if clean methods were used to make it.  Resources are a different matter, but you are blaming international companies for the behavior of a nation.  That is incredibly tunnel visioned.  If they could sell their shit elsewhere, they would.

Then that last part of your mindless dribble is just too far out to attack.  OMG CORPORATIONS ARE BRAINWASHING ME AND TAKING AWAY MY IDENTITY.  Really?  Really?  No, wait Really?  Are you that easy to manipulate?  I'm not.

we're talking about specific types of corporations.

look at the history of advertising, public relations, and propaganda, all of it based on the idea that people are stupid and need to have their desires controlled.

The corporations COULD invest in a cleaner energy generation method, the fact of the matter is that they DON'T. They're ripping our planet to shreds because of greed and profit.

I'm not being brainwashed, but imagine everyone else that is? People follow trends and buy materialistic shit because they're buying into this whole cycle of bullshit. Spys? Bros? Preps? Cars? Clothing? It's all fucking bullshit, and I am ashamed at what the human race is coming to.

To doom, I agree that exploiting children for cheap labor is a completely despicable act.  But aside from that, a lot of sweatshop information is overstated.  Again, many adults hold jobs at factories making low wages by our standards, but in their country that wage is a livable wage and jobs may be scarce.  I also think that health concerns can be a real issue, any company setting up shop somewhere needs to do everything possible to protect their workers safety.  However even in the states we have coal mine workers breathing in all kinds of bad stuff and they would be pissed at you if you tried to take away their job from them.  The key is that the people who control the conditions should take all reasonable measures to protect worker health, and the people working should want the job.  The wage they are paid is not really relevant (in a good/evil sense) if the other two conditions are being met.  Because of this, I think a lot of sweatshop lore is again, overstated to make it sound more common than it is.  There are bad ones out there still I'm sure, but most large corporations know that you get very bad press if you are found with one of those bad sweatshops.

Actually though, I like the Ben and Jerry's business model where they say no 1 person in a company should make more than 10X anyone else, no matter who is doing what.  I think things would be a lot better if more companies took that kind of hard stance on just what a person is worth compared to another.

They wouldn't be sweatshops if the wages were livable; that's why they are called such; these people work in worse conditions then our old textile mills for less then a fifth what we make, and have sickningly slave like hours.
There isn't coercion here to take the risks of working in coal mines as there are to some who have only the option to work like a slave or starve other places. Besides, coal mining is far safer now, and they have special vaccumes to suck out methane and other things so we don't end up with a horrific death toll for miners like in China.

People are worth nothing to these companies, and don't think they are. Even the CEO, who may not want to make morally bankrupt decisions has to sometimes because the law is that the company must do what it can for its share holders.

To the person who spoke of their Toyota factory, they are doing what they can to break up unions and make labor here cheaper I heard, but I'm talking about Japan. They are differant places, here and there.

I just don't buy into this logic... what corporations do you expect to invest in this clean energy methods?  They are running a business, they are trying to make money.  That is not necessarily a bad thing.  All companies exist to make money, so people can provide for themselves.

There are a few corporations who we would expect to invest in alternative energies.  But they are very limited.  Like Exxon-Mobile would be a good example.  And they do invest in alternative energies, but certainly not to the extent that they should.  And yes, there are a lot of motives that cause that.  For one, they are operating a very profitable business, and creating new opportunities in energy is not as important to them as maintaining an important role in energy production.  They don't want to get behind the times, but it hurts their bottom line to invest a ton of money and move forward into a different business model.

Yes, if I was running Exxon, I would love to spend all (ALL!) their money on clean energy alternatives.  Sadly, I do not.  But you wouldn't go up to an herbal remedy shop and tell them to spend their money on real pharmaceutical products that actually can cure cancer (but it's the future of medicine you cry!)  You can't go into a movie theater and tell them to invest in interactive multimedia experiences, when they make a killing using technologies that already exist.  In the past, invention can come cheap and with an immediate benefits, but that is just not going to be the case with clean energy.  Cheap alternatives exist.  Clean energy cannot be produced on the scale needed without a huge investment, and it will not be as cheap as what we have now for a long time to come.

This is terrible for the future of clean energy.  New innovations cannot be brought to market and compete against what is already out there.  Exxon knows this and that is why they won't spend all their money making it happen, and it is foolish and naive to expect them to be so altruistic that they would just do it anyway.  Just as it is naive to think that smart consumers will somehow create the market for clean energy.  The people are as much to blame as the corporations for this situation, and no brain washing is needed, just enough apathy and them being conscience of their own budget.  Let me say that again... people are as much to blame for this as Exxon, because they are holding on to their money also, and yes it is naive to expect them to do otherwise.

That is why the only real solution to this comes by having government level the playing field for alternative energy.  The Bush administration failed gloriously on that front, so I feel like blaming government is the best, most accurate reflection of what is going on in that market.  While you are saying corporations (a term I still think you are using way to generally to have meaning) are ripping our planet to shreds on greed, I see the same behavior in consumers and it is not evil at play here.  It's just people doing what is best for them, and so sometimes you need to make it so what is best for the individual is best for the world at large.  You want to blame corporations for the actions of men, when the same behavior is present from the top down whether or not a corporation is involved at all.

thus the problem with corporations.  they're set up to make profit even when doing so has a negative effect on humanity.

capitalism and industry are wonderful, pursuit of the monetary unit to the exclusion of human welfare is rediculous.

big corporations are bad for small business', they are essentially an oligopoly, they push competition out of the way and install price floors so that people either pay their price, or pay a similar price for a poorer product. more competition means lower prices, big corporations prevent this. i know what your rebuttal is going to be so i'll further say that in order to compete, one needs a large amount of capital in order to start a competing business, well, all of the capital is going into the pockets of CEO's, so to compete one would need a lot of capital from venture capitalists, who probably wouldn't invest in said business because it's not likely to be profitable anyway, well, at least not as profitable as being share holders in big corporations.

i recently posted this in another thread.

check this out:
Figure 7: CEOs' average pay, production workers' average pay, the S&P 500 Index, corporate profits, and the federal minimum wage, 1990-2005 (all figures adjusted for inflation)

Figure 6: CEOs' pay as a multiple of the average worker's pay

this is theft.

Quote:
If you wonder how such a large gap could develop, the proximate, or most immediate, factor involves the way in which CEOs now are able to rig things so that the board of directors, which they help select -- and which includes some fellow CEOs on whose boards they sit -- gives them the pay they want. The trick is in hiring outside experts, called compensation consultants, who give the process a thin veneer of economic respectability.

taken from:
http://sociology.ucsc.edu/whorulesamerica/power/wealth.html

part of it is the dissolution of worker's unions, in over-seas production, there are no worker's unions, and the lack of jobs means that a worker's union probably wouldn't work anyway, so they remain slave laborers.

Quote:
Milton Friedman, Nobel economist an advocate of laissez-faire capitalism sought to show that unionization produces higher wages (for the union members) at the expense of fewer jobs, and that, if some industries are unionized while others are not, wages will tend to decline in non-unionized industries.

One can't set price floors when there is a competitive market, which there is in almost every product market.

I know exactly what it means. A a concentrated market does not inherently lack competition. The only time competition is absent is when there is explicit or implicit price fixing between the companies, both of which are illegal and have been punished severely in the past.

Since my last post was a little long and I don't want my point to get lost, I will just add a closing remark.

Certainly bad things happen in this world.  However I see a lot of the comments in this thread coming back to the BigEvilCo Inc. strawman as not only the source of all these bad things, but suggestions like they are motivated to make things bad.  Corporations help create a modern world where many new things are possible that would seem like fantastic fairy tales only 100 years ago.  When you give into the argument that "corporations are bad", I do really feel like its a kind of bigotry - like you are just balling up a whole group up problems and placing them on a specific group of people without real merit for doing so.  The problems of this world that are spoken of in this thread are caused by people 100% of the time, and sometimes they are motivated by corporate needs and sometimes by their own greed and ambition for success.  Furthermore, exaggerations abound, always putting the generic corporation in a worse light than is grounded in reality.  There is no law on the books that forces CEOs to take advantage of other people in order to give the shareholders maximum benefit all the time with only consideration to how much money they are making.  I would bet most CEOs would be sickened by the thought of running a business with so little consideration for others.  Not that I believe there is no such CEO - like Dick Cheney at Halliburton, but then again the American populace put him in the vice president seat for 8 years, and no amount of corporate lobbing caused that.  People did, for better or worse.

Yes, we do, however, need price ceilings so that milk doesn't become as expensive as it is, amonge other products. We need to replace Tobacco  and corn with hemp to suck out CO2 from the air and create a plethera of renewable products such as cloth, fuel, food(seeds and oil, even low THC bud).
Get a government that listens to economists and experts(real ones), then socialize all necesarry resources so we can't be milked(remember, the oil companies were making 40 billion dollar profits, not sales).

let's take a look at drug cartels, there are many, and they compete in the market, is cocaine cheap? if you say it is, why is there so much profit?

in fact, why are there so much profits in any market? why are so CEOs making so much money? who's getting fucked?
