If you combine the two they will, but you don't need the straw.

I'm a newbie that's been looking into the same stuff.
The mycelium should be able to run through straw easily and quickly, but make sure you use wood chips also. From reading I've gathered that straw doesn't have enough nutrients for an apropriate (if any) fruit set.

I'm skipping the straw and going with cardboard and hardwood chips.

Oh, well straw is a good nutrient base, and can provide one hell of a PINSET (fruitset isnt a term here) but only really allows for 1 flush
and ofcourse we are speaking cubensis, not azurescens.

For azures it would work for an inital "spawn" but wood chips will be required for fruiting, also youll have to fruit them outdoors, as they require a certain level of microbial activity to fruit

If your are looking into azures. , do a mix of 75% woodchips and 25% sawdust. Best for sawdust is wood pellet fuel soaked in water to get it back into sawdust form. I did a grow of these this year but I put them out too late and will have to wait till next year, but the mycelium is going crazy now the temps have fallen off.
