Yeah, what everybody else has said so far.  If you really worry about not getting a balanced amino acid profile, go to your local health food store and pick up an amino acid supplement.

I'd be careful on the soy products (tofu and tempeh).  There's a large amount of phytoestrogens in them.  Not bad if you're a female of child bearing age, but if you're a post-menopausal woman or a male, the phytoestrogens can throw your hormonal levels out of whack.  Don't give them up or anything, but try to eat them only a couple times a week rather than every day.

I eat alot of tuna fish.  Low fat, low cal, and a motherfucking shitload of protein in that tiny little can.

Watch out for the Hg!  Tuna's notorious for it.  You can get canned salmon as an alt.

He's not even talking about getting vegetarian. And even for vegans protein defiency doesn't seem to be a common problem.

I'd just check your iron levels once in a while. But the broccoli you mentioned and other 'greens' can easily fix that. Chickpeas, beans, ... will give you enough proteins. And the proper amino acid profile is achieved by eating different sources of protein. No need to get obsessed about it like a lot of ppl do.

And btw, lots of mushrooms are really high in proteins.

Chlorella!  It is a single celled algae with incredible nutrients.  5grams has 5x your daily vitamin D, and B12, which only comes from meats, it is also 60% protein and 10%RNA, a vital nutrient 95% of the population don't even know exists.  You can get all your protein needs from plants easily, with some supplementation with super foods like chlorella, It's easy.

Also, Chlorella has something call Chlorella Growth Factor with is incredible in your body, helps with almost everything.

"A human being is part of the whole, called by us 'Universe'; a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest us.

Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty.

Nobody is able to achieve this completely but striving for such achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security."

I've heard good things about spirulina as well.

I found this last night:

http://www.ibc-et.org/archives/spirulina-the-magic-food

The author seems to be pretty reputable.

I've heard some people complain about the taste & smell of these blue-green algaes. Some of the same people also said that when they tried other brands of the algae which tasted & smelled better, they felt a lot better from it.

Have you noticed this, Cannashroom? Do you feel a noticeable difference in how you feel? Does yours taste & smell fresh?

Shroomism also posted some info on hempseed a while back that was interesting.

I did some research on hempseed last night and found a journal article which described the digestibility and quality of protein in hempseed isolate vs. soy protein isolate...but I can't seem to find it. Either way they said that hempseed's protein was slightly more biologically available. With the whole phytoestrogen situation with soy, as youbreakyoubuy pointed out, it seems like hempseed is a better idea.

I found this website selling 5lb. bags of conventional hempseed for ~$30 which is almost half price from most places (the company (nutiva) sells them for around $60).

Is it ever possible for people to have a thread about vegetarianism on this website without other people flaming them for choosing that diet?

If you see flaming, hit the notify moderator button.  I didn't see any in this thread.

Seriously. Not that I even care if people think one diet or the other is stupid, but it seems like the same argument comes up every time the word "vegetarian" comes up.

I bought some seaweed (dulse) and it was okay to nibble on, but pretty insubstantial. I don't see how you could use it as a protein substitute. But to fill in some vitamins, sure.

not really.  you cant get rid of ignorance, and there will always be someone who doesnt understand your way of life and resort to insult for lack of a more adult conversation.

i dont believe ive seen anyone say seaweed was a protein substitute, which it absolutely isnt. its more of a supplement, and just like you said, is loaded with vitamins and minerals.

legumes, grain, nuts and vegetables are protein substitutes.  no one of them will replace protein, but eaten in a balanced diet, they do superbly.

Re: spirulina, the health food store near me sells these "carob-spirulina chunks" that are just that, hunks of spirulina, grains, and carob. They taste AWESOME, and they're really high in protein, fiber, and other vitamins/minerals.
