Flick n' Pick/Ensuring mushies return next year?
    #9195736 -

Hey peeps,

Ive seen on here and other forums people advising that you give mushrooms a flick to spread the spores before picking. Ive been doing this but does this really work? It takes hours to get a spore print so how many are really going to spread from a quick flick that wont already have been spread by the wind? If it was so easy surely one could take the specimens home, give em a godd flicking (oo-er!) over the back lawn and look forward to a bumper harvest in ones own back garden the floowing year...!? This would never work so why would flicking in the field?
And beyond this, are there any good tips to bear in mind when picking to ensure that more return in the same place the next year? Do mushrooms tend to re-grow in the same spot indefinitely or does any one spot tend to have a limited number of productive seasons? Thanks for your help.

That was proven to be incorrect.  I was reading just the other day in the forum on it and i remember someone saying that the evidence shows that when picking the mushroom some big word i can't remember causes the mushrooms to drop spores.  It had something to do with pressure...i think

Flicking might allow a few more spores to escape, before hauling your mushrooms off, but I doubt it does much.  Just respect your patch, don't overpick.  One thing you can do to enlarge an existing patch, or start new ones is make liquid culture (water and mycelium), or spawn (mycelium colonizing a substrate) with stem butts.  You can either return to your patch and spray it, and the area around it (best done during wet weather), making sure to spray the correct substrate for the particular species, or branch out to new habitable areas and spray or pour liquid culture.  Similar steps can be taken with spawn, spreading it out, and submerging it in a proper habitat.

The flick doesn't help.

The proper way to do it is to bring along a bunch of fresh substrate (wood chips or dung) and a windex-type spray bottle full of water.

When you find a good mushroom, make a medium sized pile of substrate in a shady area nearby and use the spray bottle to wash the spores off the cap and stem of the mushroom on to the fresh substrate.  You might be able to wash some out of the gills too if you don't mind the mushroom being all wet.

Its basically the same thing mushrooms do except you are using human intellegence to make sure the spores get to some good substrate.

Another method that works really well if you are finding a lot is to place a fresh mushroom cap on top of some substrate and leave it there to print.

You could put a cubensis or pan cyan on top of a fresh cow patty, leave Psilocybe cyanescens caps on small beds of fresh wood chips or hack a notch in a dead log and put a gymnopilus cap in the wound.

I'll have to remember to start saying some big words to my mushrooms before I pick them.

Somebody on here once told me the least effective area to put spores on is around other cyans, something about the network and nutrients....
Can anyone verify if this is true or not?

This all sounds good. The mushies I'm referring to though are Ps. Semilanceata in the UK, not cyans. Would the principle work the same? (Substrate shouldn't be a problem as there's dung everywhere in the fields I pick in, though libs don't grow on the dung itself so not sure if the principles you describe would hold true?)

Ok... now that everyone has had a laugh at the wording i used I feel the need to post what i was referencing.

Senor Hongos told somebody,
"It's really unnecessary to flick the caps.  Spores are produced on basidia on the gill face.  They are forcibly ejected from the basidia when enough hygroscopic pressure builds up.  Tapping or gravity has little to do with it."

I believe the word i was looking for was hygroscopic

I wrote that?  Weird, I don't understand it at all.

Nice catch, somebody.  I was just coming in here to explain the process only to see I was quoted.  It is also the same hygroscopic pressure that creates spore prints.  This occurs by two methods, humidity absorbed by the cap surface (the cuticle) and moisture drawn up by the stem.  Each species is slightly different in how much each method contributes to the dispersal of spores.  Hygroscopic pressure refers to the moisture absorbed by the cap from the air.

I liked Alan's advice!

I used to lay Gym caps all over logs and nothing ever happened.  Now I know why.  I never cut a gash in the dead log.  I am going to try that next year.

To the OP:  I would try feeding the livestock of the field spores from the Liberty caps.  Make spore prints on sugar cubes as an experiment.

Undergrounder's advice is sound.

Nice find.  It is better to put one mushroom in a picture though if you want them identified accurately.

I've hung shrooms on the twigs of tree branches so that spores would spread in the local area rather than dropping directly to the ground. In theory this should have some chance of working.
