Getting back into a Workout routine??
    #9179191 -

Well I've finally realized that it is time for me to gradually get back into a solid healthy lifestyle (weight training, cardio and nutrition). Its been a long time since I have been on a routine and I know its going to be hard to stick it out in the times where I'll doubt myself but I would love to know how any of you guys/girls stick with your routine or maybe started it off.

I seem to fail a lot when I actually try doing all my change at one time, I get really overwhelmed then usually think up bullshit excuses to not workout. This time I am going to take it one step at a time "baby steps" according to Bob ha.

Any encouragement, tips, strategies would help me so much and just thanks in advance.

Also any weight training workouts, cardio workouts and especially nutrition plans that you may have or really informative websites would be completely awesome too, as i only have a few websites that I've checked out that I actually got from this forum.

When I get into my routine I would love to keep track of it and post results or just whatever I did that day on here to help others overcome the first month or two of the anxiety. Kinda like the Get up and Run thread I saw in here earlier this year!

:awesome:

I would do it, and post my results. I have been wanting to get back in to some kind of routine, but just haven't done so. I don't know any good ab exercises etc, but I've been doing some research and found some.

well SPSmush, first you should asses where you want to be physically, and in how long you want to get there, obviously the quicker you get there the harder it will be. But setting goals is a proven method to stay in the routine once you get it. If you trying to lose weight, consider more cardio, and a lower carbohydrate intake. If your going to improve strength, there are two main ideas, and you find the mix that you enjoy. You need to find a balance between high repetitions for endurance, and high weigh for strength. Nutrition is extremely important for fitness, and can make more of a difference on your weight loss/gain than extra time spent undersizing. Although i'm pretty sure they arent right for you yet, supplements like whey protein mixes can really boost muscle gain, because they allow your muscles to have access to the essential building block of muscle. I guess I could go on, but I'd rather not bore you too much!

I'll be in this forum everyday  , it helps so much to have a bunch of people piggybacking off each other for encouragement, at least for me its nice, like a  group of "virtual" workout partners. I guess just being honest with everyone and ourselves would help us all be self accountable too. Just my opinion on this

For your abs use an ab-wheel.  You can get them at Walmart or wherever for a few bucks.

Look on dragondoor.com for a good solution as far as exercise goes.  Start running for the time being, until you get something more intense in place.

Do the "Baby steps" but the main thing is to DO them.  Make plans on doing something every day ...and do it. Good luck

Just think, in a year from now you will be a year older no matter what, but you could also be a monster in whatever fitness area you want to focus on.

Oh you can totally bore me, I like getting a new view on things, I used to work out a lot but with others but I'm familiar with Whey, Glutamine, Flaxseed oil etc.

As far as goals I just want some improvement from where I'm at now with my weight so I think I'll have to go with a cardio heavy routine but with some body weight exercises. Since I don't have access to a gym, body weight exercises will have to do for me. Its just the general nutrition that seems to always overwhelm me combined with everything else, I'm just blank on nutrional plans that don't take up a huge slot of time for me to prepare and eat them.

I've done plenty of research about cardio, weight training nutrional plans, but its just hard for me to really combine them all.

Let me ask some of you a question...Okay, I haven't gotten fat by any means, but I did gain some weight. I used to be 175 mostly muscle, and now I'm around 210. Right before I started even gaining weight I started to develop these red lines...I looked them up, and they said they were stretch marks, but not the ones they come due to weight issues...More from growing. So, the question is what is the best way to get rid of them. According to the site I read they will go away, but they piss me off...Especially since I'm not overweight or anything really...Well, I guess I am overweight maybe 10 pounds, but whatever.

Stretch marks usually don't go away, they will fade to white eventually. If you are young (18-21) enough they will fade away to be hardly noticeable. Only way to remove them is surgically, products like cocoa butter claim to work but I have not seen any evidence that they do.

To the OP if you want to lose weight focus on cardio, diet, and weightlifting. Since you said you wont be able to go to a gym focus on cardio and count your calories using a website like www.fitday.com.

Use http://exrx.net/Calculators/CalRequire.html to find out how much calories your body uses a day and aim to eat 500 less then that number. You should lose between 1-2 pounds a week with a 500 calorie deficit and 4 days of cardio a week.

I haven't slept in 24 hours so if you want ask me anything I will check this thread after some sleep.

SPSmush, if your looking to do only body weight exercises, heres a few that I would recommend. Pushups - You can't beat them. start with 1 rep of 10 each time before you shower, then increase to 15, or maybe 2 reps of 10. either way, just get a pace and stick to it. Get a pull-up bar from a sports store, couldn't have spent a better $25. Doing pull ups with palms toward you is great for your back and biceps. doing them with palms away from you is more shoulders and still some back. Although this was hard at first, I now use my bar to do ab workouts by handing, then lifting my knees towards my chest, this really tones your arms from hanging and the changing weight and also really kills your abs. remember....being sore is GOOD!!! when you get sore after a workout you KNOW you pushed your current limit, and now you will rebuild stronger. Never work out until it hurts (some people argue that pain and extreme fatigue go hand in hand) but thats just not realistic to non-body builders. biggest thing....get out there and DO IT! The best thing about body weight training is that you can do it where ever, whenever. Good luck and let us know what kind of stuff your doing

Look into the PUSH/PULL/LEGS routine.

It is the most systematically practical routine of them all.  Well, IMO atleast...

How I stay motivated.. I always try to keep some goal in mind, be it to reach a certain BF%, or to be pushing a certain amount of weight, or even weighing a solid +180 lbs.

I always try to reach for something.

But, my #1 motivator is the muscle pump that I get.

Arnold explains it quite eloquently:

Yes, it feels amazing.  Nothing like it.  A natural high.

When I was 17 I blew up from 135-160 thanks to weight-lifting.

My friends were all blown away and most people thought that I was on the juice.

Well, I got plenty 'o' stretch-marks.  They started off as small oval-like dots.  Then they lengthened to into inches, from my armpits to my chest and even some tiny ones on my arms.

At first I didn't seem to mind, I have no idea why.  I guess that is a good thing in this life.

Then I started caring so I got myself some St. Ives cocoa butter and lathered that shit on like 2x a DAY.

They have faded immensely and are almost unnoticeable.  Although in some angles they come into focus... they just look like scars but are not nearly as repulsive as the beet-red ones that they once was.

I think you have the right idea... make a modest routine that you can stick to.  You can always expand it later.

Check out www.dragondoor.com like Sunflower said.  Consider kettlebells, I'm so glad I started with them.

Both of these are solid advice.  And here's a little tip:  for your bench and row exercises (which are what you should build your upper body workout around) don't be afraid of using dumbbells.  Dumbbell bench press and dumbbell rows will give you greater range of motion and they are unilateral which some say leads to greater gains.  I know I haven't used a barbell for bench presses or rows for a long time, and haven't missed it.  Good luck have fun. :sun:

Look into Mark Rippetoes starting strength routine. It really is great and has almost all of those exercises just keep track of your lifts and try to gradually improve them all.

A gym pass would really help you reach your goals faster then focusing on purely body weight exercises and cardio.

Here's the Rippetoe thing:

http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=998224

As for motivation, it could be a result of overtraining. I know that if people train too hard, or train properly but don't eat enough they can fall off the wagon. No matter how motivated they want to be, they just can't then blame it on their laziness. Does that sound like something you could have experienced?

Well right now I'm starting off slow with body weight exercises, like suggested Pushups, Pull Ups, etc., with some cardio to get me moving.

When I get paid I'm going to get some different foods than I normally buy and start small with a change, maybe changing one thing a day so I don't get overwhelmed.

Today is day one: I already started the day off with some pushups and a variety of crunches, I'll updaate at the end of the day.

Thanks everyone!

Make sure you keep a workout journal.  It allows you to see your progress.  It is nice to look back and see how far you've come.
