I need a general workout routine

I'm a pretty healthy, 140lb 5'9" 20 year old, and I'm trying to find out what I should be doing on a regular basis to stay fit and healthy.
I definitely get a little winded when running/hiking (both of which don't happen often) quicker than I would like to.
I was considering starting off by doing some running or jogging every other day. Maybe start off with a mile at a time. Should I be doing more than that? Any recommendations?

I always enjoyed swimming laps over running... much easier on the body. Whatever you decide, make a schedule and stick with it, otherwise it was a waste of time. The trick is to form a habit with the exercise. After a while, if you skip the workout, you literally feel like crap.
Down here in the Caribbean, I use scuba for my exercise. The actual act of diving isn't very intensive, but lugging cylinders and gear around is a great workout. By prepping the boat and filling cylinders, I get to dive for free. Three dives in a day, times two cylinders per dive, times twenty some odd people is a lot of work (~150 cylinders to and from the boat) and a lot of fun (to me at least).

I'm still kinda huskty, 6ft 220lbs, so my workout consists of 5 miles of Elliptical running or more a day then every other to every 2 days I do upper body work. I try to incorporate a lot of cardio into my workout but you probably don't need as much as me. I'd say start with some endurance training maybe?

maybe the first thing should be to ask yourself what kind of activity you like. i don't see the point in "sacrifice" for health attitude. the effects appear much quicker if you enjoy something you do... you like running that's fine... you like hooking some weights it's alright as well and it doesn't mean your gonna be pumped meat head... so there is something to consider here...
anyway i got hooked on weights.. got myself few kettlebells and started swinging them before going to work 10 minutes workout energizes me for entire day... and i don't sit in the office if you know what i mean.
so think of something you like to do and just kick start from there

I found this to be a good home routine for strength and endurance training. It has different levels so you can gauge your progress. Make it a goal to get to level eight; anybody that could do that has to be super fit. Kettebells are also not a bad idea. I have seen people get ripped with those things.
As for your running, I used to run cross-country so I will tell you what I know. I don't know your fitness level, but to avoid hurting your joints take it slow. Run until you start to sweat then run another mile. Try to run an extra mile every week. Be sure to give your body rest and listen to what it is telling you. Generally though, every other day should be fine. Doing this for a month will have you running 5ks (3.1 miles) easy. Be sure to wear good shoes!
Don't neglect stretching too. Every well rounded fitness program must incorporate flexibility training. I found that doing some basic yoga helps tremendously. I did about an hour long session once a week and saw a HUGE improvement in less then 4 weeks. Being flexible will also help make running easier.
This post is getting lengthy but, I wanted to remind you of diet. Obviously, there are a lot of choices. Have whole foods as your staple and adjust everything else according to your goals. By whole foods I mean fresh fruits and vegetables. Just use common sense and eat natural, clean things. Your body will thank you. Remember exercise is only half the equation. Quality food and quality exercise equal a quality you. Hope this helps.

when first starting running, i wouldnt suggest any more than a mile every other to every 3 days. you need to get your body used to it slowly, otherwise you will be more prone to injury. when you get to the point where you can do a mile every other day without feeling whooped, up it a little. only increase distance and intensity slowy though.
stretch before and after every run. you can incorporate bodyweight exercises into this to help warm up for the run.
this website should help you tremendously with info and ideas to create your own work out regimine. just remember, increasing in moderation is key, if you injure yourself, youre only setting yourself back while you wait to heal.

i have kettlebells and love them. i would suggest finding an instructor in your area, take about 8 - 10 classes w/ him/her. the instructors will bust your ass and you will be very sore for at least 2 days, but its some of the best exercise for your core and your back, and your ass, which is why i see a lot of women picking up the kettlebell. a good isnstructer will teach you some yoga type stretching routines as well.
after learning the proper tecniques, just buy one and work out at home. but I always find it more fun to exercise in a group setting. i just dont push myself like a group instructor would.
basically, its cardio and strength training at the same time, so a 30-45 min. work out is all that is needed. doing a whole routine of wieght lifting and then cardio (treadmill, eliptical, etc) takes twice the time.
