ok, so heres a crazy question...

the verm layer that u dump out when you are birthing your cakes... can that be put in a bowl and used to roll after dunking?  or is that verm useless at that point?

You'd want to sterilize it. It's acted as a filter so there could be nasties on it.

It wouldn't be enough to roll a cake in anyways though.

I asked that once, and supposedly it would contain many molds being a filter...though really, aren't all vermiculite touching air Bourne contams?  Well, you could try it.

its full of contams, a 5' tall bag of verm costs like $15...just buy more.

Fresh is certainly better, but if that's not an option you can reuse ime. There have been times when I couldn't find verm nearby or it was after hours when dunk time was up and I didn't want to wait till the next day, so I used the verm from the pf jars. Some had cobweb on the surface, so that verm got tossed, but any that didn't have any noticeable flaws I put in the oven for 30 min at 350. I've not had any contam issues after doing that.
