Asbestos in Vermiculite?!

Whoa, I have done a lot of reading, but this is something I haven't heard until lastnight. Lastnight I went to Home Depot to buy some vermiculite but the associate I asked to help me out said Home Depots no longer carry vermiculite because it contains trace amounts of asbestos! Is this true?! If this is true, is it safe?! I dont care that much...haha, I need some asbestos! uh, I mean vermiculite...think Wal Mart will carry it?

trace is the key word.....and its not in all vermiculite....as long as you don't breath in the dust its not gonna hurt ya

there is probably more in old houses youve been in or old buildings. i wouldn't worry about verm.

Most vermiculite is not contaminated with asbestos. However, the vermiculite ore taken from a mining operation in Libby, Montana, is contaminated with asbestiform (asbestos-like) amphibole minerals, including the regulated forms tremolite and actinolite. It also contains forms that are not currently regulated, including winchite, richterite, and ferro-edenite. Research has linked all of the these forms to asbestos-related diseases.

To be fair, you are more likely to find asbestos in plain old talcum powder than you are in vermiculite. Also, the dust from prelite is much worse to breath than what most people realize... certainly worse than vermiculite, but they still sell perlite... sometimes the world just doesn't make sense...

oh and lowes carrys it.wal-mart doesn't

it depends where you live...in my area wal-mart carries multiple brands

Ya, I think I will be able to get it at Wal Mart...is there fertilizers in vermiculite that I should be aware of?

no fertilizers. Verm is inorganic.
