Is vermiculite toxic to your health?
    #1287467 - 02/07/03 06:12 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I am wondering if you consume a little vermiculite that is stuck to the bottom of the stems, is it bad for you or am I just over reacting.

Vermeculite used to contain asbestos...But, it doesn't anymore. I buy the stuff that says its organic, which makes me feel a little better.

If I were you, Id still try to remove as much as possible. I dont think it would harm you however if you ate some.

No need to worry , verm is not toxic , but one should be carefull breathing in the dust , why ? Cause any smalll dust like particles in quantity are not good to breath in especially if prone to lung illnesses . Just do not huff the stuff directly and all will be fine . Makes me sneeze alot , so I but bandanna on face when handling it in dry state , when wet no an issue .
Sorry missed that part about eating it . Do best to remove all you can , scrape with a paring knife . Will not kill you , but is not meant for eating , so ............

vermiculite from one particular mine was found to contain asbestos years ago. but any vermiculite on a store shelf these days should not contain asbestos.

vermiculite is a rock. i'm baffled as how someone distinguishes between organic and inorganic rocks.

Well some is coated in anti wetting agents and used as insulation.
But hopefully your not using that anyway as its goes against what you need it for.
Eating it should be harmless  use those bits at the bottom of the stem for teas and strain it out
