Anyone have a wireless laptop?

Hey folks,
I never have had a laptop before but I plan on buying one today. I was curious about wireless and I know my internet has wireless connectivity but I really don't know anything about it. I have sbc dsl and a router with 6 slots but only 2 are in use.
anyway, what do I need to buy exactly to make the wireless work on it? just one of those wireless adapters? does it have to be configured in the settings or does it just automatically work?
and one more thing, do you think i would have any problems going in my backyard or deck on my laptop once wireless is setup?
thanks folks! :o)

any new laptop you buy will definitely have wireless connectivity...
as far as setting it up, that depends on your router... is it a wireless router? (is there an antenna sticking out of it?) if so, then all you have to do to set it up is refer to your router's instruction manual and activate the wireless internet... be sure you use a password and wpa encryption, since wep is pretty easy to crack...

true.
your wireless should auto connect at free access sites anyway. i had a guy set up a wifi network in my home, very convenient.

WEP is fine. If you know your neighbors and know they aren't hackers then the only thing you'd have to worry about is wardrivers. But that isn't common nowadays, they have better things to do. If you're not a corporation there's nothing to worry about unless you have very sensitive information on your network. Most people just want the wireless for internet access though, not for file sharing etc. Yes, WPA is more secure, but for a standard home network, it's not necessary, WEP is easier to use. I'd jsut suggest using a 10 hexadecimal key.

i dunno... i went through my whole semester abroad with my neighbors wep connection after cracking the password (setting up an internet connection would have been too expensive)... i know there is usually not much to worry, but i'd rather not have anyone mooching my bandwith or trying to access my files... nowadays i just leave the encryption out and use a mac address restriction... works like a charm...

that works like a charm, but a pain in the ass when a friend comes over and wants to use the internet. you have to get his mac addy, you have to log into the router and bla bla bla

nope... just used the internet... and pretty carefully at that... i rarely downloaded anything and if i had to i would do it at night... and yeah, sharing is caring, but i don't feel right just leaving my wireless connection open like that... i'd rather have my neighbors ask me for the password... then again, how are they supposed to know where they would have to knock to get it...

nah just replace the router you have with the new wireless router... you'll have to inpute the user/password from your internet service provider again, though...

I take my wireless laptop out front of my house all the time, it doesn't even affect connection speed. I love wireless.

OK guys I looked at the laptops really quick and the wireless routers, I didn't have enough time to buy one or ask any question as I have stuff to do online, they had HP, Compaq, Tobisha, dell, Sony what do you feel is better?
they had screen ranging from 15 to 17 regular, and wide screen...and I seen another antenna for the wireless router that's bigger I guess it attaches on to it, do you think I should buy that?
