Job interview tips
    #9104399 -

Its for sales. I'm a young guy haven't ever had a job that required a formal interview. What kind of questions are they going to ask? What do they look for generally? How to dress(thinking of a nice suit)? That kind of thing, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Answer questions, dont try to avoid them. Speak confidently and display your self as a unique oppertuinity to them. Try and ask them questions, as well, that are intellegent and relate to what the boss will want out of you. Be offering. Sit up straight, hands on the table and dont move around unless emphazising your point. No gum, or cell phone.

Learn about the company before you go in.

Confidence is going to be your key, with salesmen they like to always sell everyone something, whether its an item or an idea. Its some kind of psychological dominance game they like to play.

The last interview for a sales job I had was when I was in my early 20's selling cell phones. During the interview I was asked to give my sales pitch on a pen he had picked up off his desk. Basically I never shut up and answered all of his questions with an assuring tone even if I didn't necessarily have a specific answer. The guy loved it and hired me on the spot.

Oh...and I wore kahkis with a deep blue dress shirt and light red...if it helps.

Watch out for the "Ummm's..."  and "derrrr...'s"

When speaking off the cuff and under pressure people tend to babble.  Practice answering questions out loud, concisely, and to the point.  Seriously.  Practice out loud right now:

"So, what interested you in this job in the first place?"

"What kind of skills do you have?"

...the whole experience is (and is as) a profound piece of knowledge.  It is an indellible experience; it is forever known.  I have known myself in a way I doubt I would have ever occurred except as it did.

Smith, P.  Bull. Menninger Clinic (1959) 23:20-27; p. 27.

...most subjects find the experience valuable, some find it frightening, and many say that is it uniquely lovely.

If you are unclear about the question, ask for them to clarify it before you continue.  If you don't have a clear relevant answer, DO NOT RAMBLE about unrelated things, or try to change the subject.  If the interviewer tells you to take a moment to think up an appropriate answer, for God's sake take that moment and don't just start babbling..  this is a huge interview killer.

Try and think up a time where you were challenged by a customer, and how you dealt with that situation.  Same goes with shitty boss or co-worker.  Think up something at which you failed, and at which you succeeded.  These are standard questions you should be able to answer clearly and thoughtfully.  Practice in front of a mirror, and really..  don't be nervous.  If you don't get the job.. fuck them.

this is a really great resource for anyone looking for a job regardless of the field: http://www.jobinterviewquestions.org/

make sure you know the answers to all of the questions on this page: http://www.jobinterviewquestions.org/questions/general-questions.asp
and this page: http://www.jobinterviewquestions.org/questions/behavioral-interview.asp

as other people have suggested you should practice out loud. i usually go through the questions, jot down notes of specifics that i want to mention and then once i've answered all of them i then go through and practice to myself. i don't use a mirror, but rather just pace around the house talking to myself

if you can answer all of these questions then you will have NO reason to be nervous because you will be well prepared!

key things to note:

know your resume inside and out! all the dates, everything!

ALWAYS do research on the company you are interviewing with. if they ask you to tell them about the company and you know nothing it results in big negative points. just go on their website and check them out. read the "about us" section as well as any news articles they have linked. it shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes and it could really make the difference between being tossed out after 1st rounds and getting a 2nd interview!

it's also really important to have questions for the interviewer. some good ones that i like to ask are:
can you describe what a normal day is like in this role?
what is the structure of the company/department?
what do you think is the most challenging part of the job?

even if you only have 2 really good questions, that's enough to impress them, but really, asking questions is going to give you the most information about the job and whether it's going to be right for you! so really think about what your ideal job is and then ask questions to see how the job you interview for compares to the job you are hoping to land!

good luck!!!

Thank you so much for the great advice I feel better having these resources at my hands great links. I'm going to study the company website and go over that link until I know it like the back of my hand.
