how is anyone doing us a favor by voting McCain or Obama,
they've already got 99% of the vote, what have you seen
several of us doing on this board, trying to convince the
undecided and the former Ron Paul supporters that by voting
for one of these corporate puppets that they've decided to
vote the opposite of what he stood for.

sure this is a limited audience but it's just as limited in my
town or any major city but if I can convince you and 3 others
to do just what I'm doing now, then we build momentum

show how much we care about this country, what exactly will
that marxist do to benefit this country, I remember you being

more importantly, who is the lesser of evils

According to the data on CNN.com, he averaged 8% support, with a standard deviation of 6%. That's including the caucuses, where he did better.

the result I saw may have been skewed, even still 8% is pretty
damned good for someone whos popularity grew because of the
internet it's also twice as much support as nader had when he
was running for office in 2000 and more than others in recent
history

Well, if your state is already decided one way or the other, voting for a 3rd party does have some logic.  But if you are in a swing state, it's your obligation to vote for one of the two major candidates.  Just look what happened in florida in 2000 with Ralph Nader.

convoluted logic, your obligation is too yourself to vote the candidate that best matches your views and ideals, you have no obligation to the people in your state to vote the way they want you to

That article doesn't prove that Nader didn't spoil the vote. It just shows that he's not the only factor. Sure, it says that some democrats voted for Bush, and if they had voted for Gore then Gore would have won - and this is true. But those are known factors, and attempts are made at every election to get those voters back.
Everything else being equal, the reason why Nader was a vote spoiler is because if he didn't run, the people who voted for him would have voted for Gore (or not at all). If that was the case then Gore would have won. He only needed 543 votes, and Nader received 97,488.

Those 97,488 votes did nothing to help Nader, or the Green party. The only people it helped were the Republicans.

If you care about your future, vote the lesser of two evils. If you feel that McCain is the lesser, then so be it, vote for him. Maybe in the next four years you can try to build momentum to break down the 2 party system, but right now, this here is a 2 party election. By your logic, if you disagree with whichever 3rd party candidate you are supporting on one issue, you should write in somebody who you completely agree with. Otherwise you are just compromising and voting for Paul or Nader or whoever, to prove a point and try to get them a noticeable percentage of the vote. The percentage a third party candidate gets does not make a statement. Making a statement makes a statement. We have the choice between 2 roads we can go down next month. One is continuing in the path we are traveling. If you support that, well then I don't like you but that's your choice. The other is change, for better or worse. Not huge change, but something different.

If you care about your future vote for who ever you think is going to fix it for the better.  Mainstream corrupt politicians are not where its at.

Indeed. Which is why it's important to vote for someone who has a chance at winning.

Dude, no shit, but mainstream corrupt politicians are who are going to win. Do you really think that highly of the general American populace that they would know to choose a good candidate? There is no way America would *ever* vote somebody like Ron Paul into office.

All the stupid fucks voting shitty politicians into office deserve what they get, but it sucks that we free thinking individuals have to suffer for their sins. All we can do is hope to sway their vote towards the lesser of two evils.

I agree that ron paul has a zero percent chance of winning.  However im not going to join the sheep and pick the lesser of the two evil, im going to vote for someone that i truly believe in.  I would use my one vote on someone who has positive cultural values than decide between two dead ends.

As peterluber said, no candidate truly matches your views so you always have to compromise. So do you compromise a bit and vote for someone who can't win, or do you compromise a bit more and vote for someone who can? The outcome of the election will affect you more than the bit of self-satisfaction you might get for voting for a 3rd party.

It's not about media popularity - it's about recognising that America's voting system enforces a two-party rule. Until the system is changed, you're stuck with two parties. And voting for a third party does not change the system.

There is no two party rule.

In order for a democracy to work we have to assume that we are all the similar.  That's why there are so many people on either one side or the other, because we view each other as democrat or republican.  No one has ever asked me if im a libertarian.  Thats because we assume that we either think democrat or rebublican, and the associated cultural values following the parties.  Its just the way a democracy works.  Its sad because the beauty of the earth is that we are not all similar, we are all quite different.
