Should monotubs be covered with wax paper?
    #9061629 -

Ill be starting a monotub soon and was wondering if it would be a good idea to put a layer of wax paper (with small holes cut in it) over the hpoo substrate while it is colonizing in the tub? Would this be a cause for contaminants? If it is, in what way would i sterilize the paper?

Thanks

in monotubs, i don't think it's necessary to cover the substrate with anything while it's colonizing. If you just keep it sealed and in the dark you should be fine

Wrong. not trying to be a dick.
but, when your tub is colonizing you want to have the higher C02 content to allow the mycelium to continue to colonize, and once its done when you take the paper off it will get plenty of fresh air... The numero Uno pinning trigger, you have a better chance of success.

2 scenarios that would suck if not using the paper.

1. Contamination, contamination. no matter how sealed, contaminates will find a way in.
2. The inability to increase the amount of FAE to that allowing the mycelium to pin, or premature pinning before full colonization that will eventually result in contamination.

Whether its in the dark or light it will be fine... thats another misconception.
Light isnt much of a pinning trigger

i always thought you could use monotubs as a set it and forget it growing strategy.

so should you use wax paper? or is something like cling-wrap or aluminum foil ok?

Mycelium will actually consume aluminum foil and tin pans.

the paper is a set it and forget it kinda thing in my eyes, but anymore if I make a tub up, its with 100% colonized in the bag substrate, not spawn. and I usually just case and trigger the pinning.

If I even make a tub, I like to fruit uncased in the bags.

yeah, i made the mistake of using an aluminum pan on my first casing... learned that lesson pretty good.

i did a bag my first grow and had average success... i'd like to think the results from a tub would be higher. why bags?

Lazyness on that aspect.
wanna talk about set it and forget it...
make a final fruiting substrate and load 5lbs in each bag and sterilize... knock up with 60cc LC.
in 2 weeks crumble em up and mix em up real good, and in 2-4 more weeks depending on a few things, they fruit all on their own, and all I have to do is cut the bags open and harvest. tape them shut and wait till next harvest... like 4-5 times mostly.

How many holes should there be in the paper and how big should the holes be? How should I check to see when it's fully colonized? Do I need to sterilize the paper or a needle/knife/etc. that I'll be puncturing the paper with?

Should I cover the holes in the sides of the monotub with tyvek or polyfill during colonization?

I thought the wax paper thing was for pinning, not colonizing, but whatever.

There may be some benefit to this, but I can tell you it is not necessary.

I would leave it alone. It will be fine. it may hold in some moisture but just try and keep it in a closet or something. Somewhere with no moving air. Until you fruit it.
