Bulk substrate too dry?
    #1010353 - 10/31/02 03:47 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Just mixed my 12 PF cakes of GT with equal amounts of earthworm casting and vermiculite. My question is that after one day they already show growth but I'm worried that they may be too dry. Should I add a little water spray just to be safe, or leave them alone. I've followed the pavolon's dog tek and they are covered with aluminum foil with holes. Thanks for any advice.

Wow, you all your eggs in one basket, didn't you? Why do you think its dry, does it look dry, or feel dry?

how was water added to the substrate in the first place? if you pasteurized it in some sort pillow case, and let the water drain over a sink afterward for a few hours, and then even squeezing water out, is plenty of moisture that it wont dry out in one day. plus verm, if it was saturated, retains a lot of moisture

Actually, I dunked all of my cakes for 12 hours, ground them up and mixed with saturated wormcasting and equal amounts of verm. I used 2 cakes per tray, so I didn't put all my eggs in one basket, but that would have been one large flush!
