What are earmarks and why are they significant?

thanks, I already know that. However I feel like McCain is making a huge deal out of earmarks when, in some cases it creates jobs and furthers research.

I just don't understand why they are making such a big deal about our government spending money on our economy. I think really the spending in other countries should be more of a concern then earmarks.

Maybe I am wrong, as I said I don't know much about the issue

Earmarks are one of the major methods politicians in congress use to anonymously waste tax money on their own special interest projects.  Because they can remain anonymous, there is no fear of repercussion from the angry tax paying voter come election time.  Although earmarks can create jobs and such, typically they are "rewards" given out by politicians, payed for by the us, the tax payer.  Why should the people in Michigan pay for the construction of a new golf course in Florida, and what does a golf course in Florida have to do with a law directing money towards law enforcement?  This is the type of BS that earmarks bring about.

Doesn't every politician participate in trying to gather earmarks for their state?

There's something like 10,000 earmarks a year, with 535 congressman, so that's an average of a little less than 20 earmarks per congressman.

Then why are the politicians pointing fingers about who asked for earmarks if they all ask for earmarks?

It's partisan politics.

For example, Bush didn't mind earmarks for his first 6 years in office, in which time he didn't use a single veto.

However, as soon as the Democrats won over congress, all of a sudden, he started to talk about the evils of earmarks, of "pork barrel spending."  He threatened to veto any bill with earmarks, by which he meant an inordinate number of Democrat earmarks.  Of course, he hasn't actually done so, since that statement wasn't able to stop either party from the practice.  They know that if they don't use their power, the opposition will.
