Unusual green-gilled, white-spored, smooth-capped Lepiota.

I need a bit of help on this one.

I found it growing in a lawn just down the street from me.  From the road I thought it might be a Parasol mushroom.  So I waited until nightfall, put on my dark "gank-the-shrooms" hoody and jeans, and ganked 'em.  I didn't know what I was in for.

The mushroom is unusual in that it has a really smooth cap, that severely limits which Lepiota it could be (and count naucina out because it certainly isn't that) and it had green gills which showed up upon drying.  The print was white for the most part.  The color of the print and the smooth cap rule out Chlorophyllum molybdites, which we don't have in our area anyway.

So, what the hell is it? 

It was fairly large.  Cap about 3 1/4 inches and stem about 4 1/2 inches long.

I have some papers on Lepiota but I haven't got around to going over them yet.  Trust me, this one isn't in a field guide.  I thought I would put it in front of you guys before I look at the papers or contact Elsa Vellinga.

Any ideas at all?

Interesting find, I like it! That cap looks so smooth and those gills are most definitely green...:shrug:

There really wasn't any trick to find this other than looking at lawns while I was driving.  Sometimes it's my favorite way to hunt.

A word of explanation on the "ganking."  In our area you have two types of people.  Normally I just go up to the door and ask to pick their mushrooms.  I have been told no twice since I have been hunting, both horse-people (many of whom are assholes in our area).  But, if you drive by and slow down to look at the mushrooms or if you walk down the sidewalk and pay any attention to them, the next thing you know they are  :seeya:

Evidently, having people stare at your mushrooms makes people nervous or pissed off.  Plenty of times I've walked down the sidewalk, pointed out a mushroom, only to have it vanish on my return walk.  Sometimes I find only pieces after the homeowner has destroyed it.

But hey, it was only a Parasol.  Not a big deal unless you have never eaten one, like me.  The neighbor's house next door had what I thought was a huge clump of Gyms.  When I went to gank the Parasol it was gone.  So I went up to the guy's door, knocked on it and asked him where the mushrooms were.  That led to a nice and LONG conversation about mushrooms, politics and everything under the sun.  He was a lonely old Italian man.  :lol:  Anyway, he told me he picked them and threw them in the trash.  Then he gave me everything he threw away.  Turns out they were just Honey mushrooms.  Damn it!  :ohwell:
