Not to mention the non-white stem... that's a dead giveaway.

Ive heard that often but always just assumed that there had to be chips under the bushes but can cyans grow naturally under rhodie bushes?

There are chips underneath the bush....they are VERY old alder chips. They are definatly not natural, the woodchips were inoculated by a very nice person sometime in the past.

depending on the area it could have been me

i placed nearly 30 coffee sleeves full of stem butts from port angeles to olympia in the correct woodchips.

and hey if u wanna know if the woodchips are good or not, try breaking a few of them.
if u can with ease, most of the time that means to move on.

if ur fingers feel like they are breaking instead, its likely they will grow there at one point or another.

i cant break a rather nice piece of alder chip for the life of me, same with a few other hardwoods, but if its softwood it tears right up.

few mushrooms around here but im definitely in the wrong area of the north state of california to be quoting on the progress.

definitely mushrooms of all kinds popping up though despite the previously 117deg temperatures.

things usually dont get started around here until december-january.
the earliest ive found a cyan in the bay area i believe was august 16th though.

So once the storm hits, how long does it take for pins to pop up and then how long after that for them to reach a good  size if it rains all day for 4 or more days..

i say wait 48 hours after the first rain of the season hits the ground before you start looking, and then look everyday until the season is over

meaning look everyday from now on, couple hours a day or more if u can, early morning is GOOD!

for years, every sunday, there was mature fruits that were pins the previous sunday.

it just keeps producing in either solid flushes or sporadic growth here and there
keep an eye out, check the same good places every day/every 3 days minimum

when i was in washington i had many good habitats in town, i would ride 20 miles a day on my bike hunting, for nearly a month. until 5 patches appeared at places i neglected in town because there was never anything there. i traveled for days sometimes through the puget sound from olympia to bremerton, all the way to the very northwestern point of washington, and didnt find shit, and they were right under my nose in my neglected spots the whole time.

get out there damnit, and dont neglect looking in bushes that provide good cover, look damnit!
bikes are awesome...
oops my chain slipped off... ill just put that back on and be on my way and oh look my backpack is loaded with fungus oh my how did that happen.

and 1kldude, try the method of trying to break one like i mentioned.
cedar is soft, it will break easily. think hampster bedding.
alder is really solid, think your fingers snapping off while trying to break a nice chip of it.

Ive found small cyans and came back the next day and they were mature when its a constant downpour.
But before the cap opens it seems like they grow slower...

Anyway its supposed to rain here untill monday so expect some more wild cyan pics by this weekend:flyhigh:

Get some spore prints on those for fun. For some reason the first picture has a look of familiarity to it, not sure why. The others don't look active to me, but a spore print would go a long way. Also, it should be noted that I know about jack shit when it comes to IDing mushrooms.
