Alder Chips?
    #8982074 -

Any of these woodchips from alder trees?
These are from different parts of my local area so I was wondering which ones I should return to check.

The ones on the right could be good. The other two look like pine.

All of those different woodchips are from a church, the flower beds around it are all different kinds of woodchips so im just gonna check the whole thing every time I go.
And since its a church they should'nt care about me picking.

The middle and right picture are legit. Cyans will pop right out of em... If you dont see mycellium start within the next week or two, start it yourself and they will thrive.

Couldn't you just use Alder chips from a store used for grilling to start your own bed?  I think they are untreated?

Yes you can. They may be untreated but they will probably be kiln dried.  Kiln dried will work but fresh cut chips are ideal as they have more nutrients still in them for the hungry little cyan mycelium.

Ok that makes sense.  Can fresh ones be purchased from a plant store or something to that extent that are not treated?  Just for future reference in case I feel like making my bed....hopefully I won't have to lay in it.....

Otherwise, the dried ones will work just fine too. Fresh ones are ideal, but dried ones will work, no problem.

i have an alder and a red alder. would it be a good idea to cut some of the limbs down, chip them up and spread some in my field?

I would cut them into chips, soak em in water for a few months and spread em out the next spring in a flower bed

Soaking them for a few months would be a bit too much, I think. Let them soak (if at all; you don't really need to soak freshly cut chips) for 2-3 days max, that'll definitely do the trick. Soaking longer will most likely result in a rotted mess.

Btw, just chipping some wood and chucking it into a yard will not guarantee colonization by psilocybe, most likely, some species of psathyrella or coprinellus will establish first. You can increase your chances by planting some mycelium of the desired species to give it a head start. There's some teks on these boards that describe how you can easily make some cyans spawn by placing little bits of cyans on moist cardboard and let that colonize for a while. Use the search to find out more.
