Notice there's nothing said about scholastic ability, just nationalistic indoctrination.

This is extremely troubling. Cali citizens needs to raise some cain over this. Freedom is never stolen, but only given away.

Honestly some parents are great at homeschooling and their kids benefit from that and some don't know a book from their asses and shouldn't be teaching anyone anything, regardless of if your daily job lets you train a 15 year old to use the fry-o-later!

I don't think home schoolers need teaching credentials but they should still be held in some sort of check as to how/what they are teaching! In most states all that you are required to have to substitute teach is a high school diploma, but you still need to follow a lesson plan.

Just per chance... How would the police find out your mom is homeschooling you? If it is supposedly illegal its not like she'd report herself to the state... Was it like one of those pissed off neighbors that knows whats best for your kid more than you do type situation? Is truancy that big of a deal?

How is it your business what someone wants to teach their children?

Do you even know what you want taught?

The crime exists when someone is harmed.  Until then, stay out of everyone elses business.

1. Follow a lesson plan to include revisionist history, nationalistic indoctrination, 2000 year old math principals that require a new and expensive text book every year.

2. How would police know if your mom is homeschooling... if the kid doesn't show up to the brainwashing terminal, I mean public school. lol

"CALIFORNIA
Compulsory Attendance Ages: “between the ages of 6” by Dec. 2 (§ 48200) and under 18 years of age.” California Education Code § 48200, 48400, 48410.
Required Days of Instruction: 175 days, only for public schools.
Required Subjects: English and must “offer instruction in the several branches of study required to be taught in the public schools.” Grades 1-6: English, mathematics, social sciences, science, fine arts, health, physical education.
Home School Statute: None.
Alternative Statutes Allowing for Home Schools: Home Schools have 4 options:
Option 1. Under § 48222, the individual home school could qualify as a private school by filing an annual private school affidavit:
a. the instructors must be capable of teaching;
b. the instruction must be in English;
c. the instruction must be in the several branches of study required in public schools;
d. attendance must be kept in a register; and
e. a private school affidavit must be filed with the Superintendent of Public Instruction between Oct. 1 and Oct. 15 of each school year. Cal. Educ. Code §§ 33190, 48222.
Option 2. Homeschoolers could enroll in a private school satellite program and "homeschool” through that private school. The private school “satellite school program” (PSP) must comply with Cal. Educ. Code § 48222 (see #1 above). Many homeschool families have organized these private PSPs which enroll anywhere from two to several hundred families.
On August 8, 2008, the California Court of Appeals for the Second Appellate District ruled that “California statutes permit homeschooling as a species of private school education.” The California Appellate Court defined homeschooling as full-time education in the home by a parent or guardian who does not necessarily possess a teaching credential. The Court concluded that the legislative history in California, although somewhat complicated, confirms the Legislature’s intent that homeschools operate as private schools in California. The Court found it significant that education enforcement officials (the Governor of the State of California and the Superintendent of Public Instruction) at both the state and local levels agree that homeschooling may constitute private schools. The Court concluded that the cases of Turner and Shinn, that had been used against homeschoolers, were no longer good precedent and
CA-1
California CA-2
would undermine a practice that has been, if not actively encouraged, at least acknowledged and accepted by the officials and the public for many years in California. (Jonathan L. v. Superior Court, Cal.Rptr.3d, 2008 WL 3197535, Cal.App. 2 Dist., 2008)
Option 3. The home school could have instruction provided by a certified private tutor (Cal. Educ. Code § 48224).
Option 4. The child could be enrolled in an independent study program at home, using the public school curriculum. Cal. Educ. Code § 51745. Under this option, the child is considered a public school student and has to abide by the rules and policy of the public school.
Teacher Qualifications: None, if home school registers as a private school, or enrolls in a private school satellite program.
Certification is necessary only if the home school parent chooses to qualify as a private tutor.
Standardized Tests: Not required by statute."

There have been no recent rulings changing these statutes.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Supreme Court decides to hear this case.  It's a pretty big issue with many conflicting court decisions and laws.

(NaturalNews) A California appeals court has ruled that homeschooling of children is illegal unless their parents have teaching credentials from the state.

“California is now on the path to being the only state to deny the vast majority of homeschooling parents their fundamental right to teach their own children at home,” said Michael Smith, president of the Home School Legal Defense Association.

The court overturned a lower court’s finding that homeschooling did not constitute a violation of child welfare laws.

“California courts have held that … parents do not have a constitutional right to homeschool their children,” Justice H. Walter Croskey said.

The decision stunned parents of the state’s roughly 166,000 homeschooled children. While the court claimed that it was merely clarifying an existing law and not making a new one, the decision leaves the parents of homeschooled children at risk of arrest and criminal prosecution.

“At first, there was a sense of, ‘No way,’ ” homeschool parent Loren Mavromati said. “Then there was a little bit of fear. I think it has moved now into indignation.”

Parents’ reasons for homeschooling their children range from religious beliefs to dissatisfaction with the education received at public or private schools. But according to the court, all California children between the ages of 6 and 18 must attend either a full-time public or private school or be taught by a tutor credentialed for their specific grade level.

“A primary purpose of the educational system is to train school children in good citizenship, patriotism and loyalty to the state and the nation,” Croskey wrote.

California’s largest teachers union welcomed the decision as did the Children’s Law Center of Los Angeles.

According to the law center’s executive director, Leslie Heimov, children should not be educated at home, because they need to be “in a place daily where they would be observed by people who had a duty to ensure their ongoing safety.”

Looks like the "Kindergarten Cop" is on the case.:monkeydance:

And a public education can certainly prepare you for this.

My main concern is a parent's ability to teach.  I know a lot of parents who can't handle pre-calculus and calculus, much less teach it.  Add to this chemistry, physics etc. and I just don't think that a lot of parents are qualified.

Then on top of this home schooled kids miss out on things like clubs and sports, prom etc.

I'd be interested to see the statistics however, comparing standardized test scores.

She would have to register her kids for school in the first place... they don't just know that you're coming Assbag! In a lot of states you have to take tests before 1st grade to help establish if you're ready for school or if you might have a learning disability! And yeah homeschooling is "revolutionaized" too now... we can do it online with no textbooks!

And as for the blah blah blah children should have to learn certain stuff in school or home school....
If your kid takes the GED... They will need to know the shit that the state school teaches to pass the test, because most homeschool programs won't give you a real diploma unless you follow their lesson plans!

I have never been homeschooled but I've known at least 20 people who have through sports, church and work! Unless New Hampshire is completely different than every other state than I'm not just talking  out of my ass!

Seriously kids that are homeschooled aren't always taught by parents either! I knew a few kids in highschool that had a friends mom who taught like 5 of them. If it were your kids, wouldn't you want to know what is being taught to them? That is kind of the point of the PTA and parent teacher conference/open houses!

If a public school teacher had just a diploma would you want you kid learning from them??? If you paid money for your kid to go to school would you want to waste your money on someone who know nothing other than what they were taught in highschool?

Either way if your kid can pass the GED who gives a shit how they were taught or what credential they have!

As a GED student who didnt attend high school, I can say that the GED is a joke.  The high school equivalence test should be much harder.

  No way.  The GED test is super, super easy.  I didnt study one bit, didnt go to school for 4 years before, and hit a double chamber bong just before the test.  I passed it no problem.  And Im not a high IQ smart person either.

A former teacher helping her foster daughter with the test... plus a shit-ton of people who never went to public school at all that I knew taking the test.

This is in New Hampshire though guys... I guess every state has different tests and obviously more than one per state so people can't cheat! Maybe New Hampshire just has higher standards!

Do you really feel good about that though??? Would you want your own kid to just breeze by on a flawed system?

It makes me wonder if America is just getting dumber because of all that bullshit that georger bush did with the no child left behind... Lets just dumb down the system so no one can get ahead! Forget special classes to help kids just make all of them the same so the dumbest student can pass and make the statistics look better!

No I dont feel good about it.  Like I said, the test should be much harder.

I dont think anybody should get a degree (GED or highschool) if they cant do basic algebra.

And thats really what I mean about home schoolers being in check. If they can't do/know the material that they teach their kids, how can they teach and expect their kids to get it?
