Liberty Cap Hunting?
    #8963537 -

Im going to be going out on my first lib hunting trip soon some time this week. I must have read about 500 articles on the internet about these amazing things. But none of these have actually helped. What conditions in the weather should I be looking for on my perfect trip? I know I wanna be looking in fields with short grass and not underneath trees. I know a few fields where they are supposedly out at the moment because a friend of mine went but I dont really see him that often so I thought Id ask you guys. So bascily what conditions should I be looking for and what are the distinctive features of libs? I know the look like nipples but some that ive seen on here are more triangular :S Yeah so any help on ID and weather conditions would be appreciated.

Look for unploughed fields grazed by cows or sheep. The taller the grass, the taller the libs, but generally, grass won't grow very tall in well-grazed fields, which is what you're looking for. Clumps of grass and/or sedge are the perfect habitat. As to conditions, night time temps should drop to ca. 5C and day time temps should ideally not exceed something like 15C. Moist weather is best, but you don't need heavy rains; just dew and mist will do fine. Libs are generally easier to spot in the morning due to the coloration; they will fade from brown to white as they dry during the day, making them hard to spot against dead grass. For further information, refer to the millions of pics and descriptions of liberty caps that are on the net; apparently you've already found some. I can especially recommend uarewotueat's liberty cap gallery and the liberty cap pics on pilzepilze.de.

So basicly they have a nipple thing on top. And they have faint brown lines going down the side but some of the picks I've seen have no faint brown lines on them  I'm waiting for the weather being good then I'm going. I dont wanna go and waste my time. And if it's just one day with perfect shroom weather should I go then or wait for a pattern of days?

Go out whenever you can. There's no such thing as a wasted day, although many days, you'll learn about the conditions when/where libs apparently don't fruit.

click the link in my sig and you will see how much they can vary in morphology for yourself.

it really does take some experience to recognise their different guises.

Should work fine if you're logged in. Anyway, just keep looking; you'll stumble across them some time or another and you'll learn to recognize them. Learning by doing beats looking at Internet pics by far.
