My first post! - I have a question about making Shiitake plugs from a pile of mushrooms..
    #8968125 -

Hey there -
My first time here, and I'm wondering about making spawn plugs from mushrooms that are in a woodpile..unexpectedly.

I live in Appalachia, and know I don't have much time if I'm am going to make logs from them..

I had a mushroom log next to a huge tree that fell, and my awesome neighbor cut it up for me and chipped it. One problem, the log got chipped as well. BUT - check this out!!

So, I know how to make a log and all that, but how do I make the plugs from the mycelium on these little guys???

The woodpile

There are tons of these clusters..

 Thanks!!

Well, isn't that just something else!  I'd say that.. first of all, make very sure those are shiitake!  If they are, I think you can try going "old school" with this one.  This is more or less the first method used by the Japanese to cultivate shiitake:

Cut a few fresh logs that will fit in that area, make a few trenches in the chip pile and bury the logs in them.  It would probably speed things up if you scarred the logs up with a chainsaw where they come into contact with your wood chips, and mixing some fresh sawdust in with the chips would facilitate things a bit.  Shiitake grow very slowly, so it will take some time.

There are probably tons of other options, but off the top of my head that seems like the easiest way to go about it.  There are some great ideas for this sort of thing in Paul Stamets' Mycelium Running, which is an excellent book that you may want to pick up.

You probably have some time here, too.  If you can't get logs in before winter, cover the pile with some straw mulch or something similar to keep things from getting completely frozen.  Fungi are tenacious critters, and I wouldn't be surprised if they kept coming up there for some time.
