monotub tek clarification

when spawning to the bulk sub on the bottom of the monotub, the entire sub/spawn mixture is poured into the bottom of the tub directly?

question two, if this is the case, is it covered with foil or something or just the lid on the tub applied?

question three, does it have to be cased? because i was reading a monstermitch tek where it said it didn't have to be, and i'd rather not so i dont have to mess with pH levels, but if it's going to be a problem, then i'd like to know

i recently did a cake grow which required a bit of misting and dunking, the appeal of the tub to me is that, in monstermitch's tek he says that the lid stays on the whole time.... no misting or anything. so... with that goal in mind, to case or not to case??

1 no- use garbage bag on the bottem so its easier to move yuor substrate later. then drop the whole thing on top or mix it with your spawn how ever you want.
2 no foil on top, some people use crimped wax papper
3 no, you dont need a casing layer

Foil is fine. I always line the bottom with foil then mix up the sub/spawn in there. And unless you care about getting a little extra in later flushes then no you shouldn't case it. Monotubs perform very well uncased.

yea, monotubs are almost as easy as it gets, just leave it sealed till its colonized, then introduce it to a 12/12 lighting cycle and itl take care of itself. you only have to open it to harvest.  a suggestion i would make to a first time monotubber is go for a 2:1 or 3:1 spawn ratio, itl colonize fast enough so you dont really have to worry about contams, itl be like a week to 10 days.

or do the lil, tall shoebox shapped plastic totes. You can set up about 10 of them and use the same light bulb. Each one of them should put out 1 or 2 zips dry.

check the links in my sig.

The black plastic is good to have, the myc sticks to it and as the cake/substrate get eaten/used up, it shrinks...the black plastic sticking to the substrate shrinks with the cake and thus keeps side pinning to a minimum...plus keeps your cake from sitting in water that drips down the side of your tub.

Don't cover your substrate, just leave the top on...don't open it until 110% fully colonized.

make sure you use bin bags/construction bags though, because alot of cheaper trashbags are actually not opaque, and you will get side pinning out the wazoo and you wont be able to see it untill they are soggy and unedible.

Not to threadjack but I put my garbage bags on the outside of some of my tubs.  I have been having problems with contamination on the tubs with the bags on the inside (All had pools of water in them)  Should I mist all of my tubs less?  I mist about 3-5 times a day and fan the same amount.  I have no casing layer.  As for you question about what to use on top, I have my regular plastic lids and it doesn't seem to be causing any major problems, and they are stackable.

pools of water are not caused by your bags. they are caused by you over saturating your substrate.

Some would disagree with you HH.  Im not sayin it wont work but it is better (depending on your Circumstances) to put some foil or wax paper on top of the sub.  It keeps co2 levels higher, keep from drying out the sub and help stop premature pinning.

field capacity...there is a very fine line between that and over saturation.

Good thread guys....I like what was said about casing layers being optional because I haven't personally seen a benefit to using them, however I am only keeping projects till the second flush and then composting them.  And I haven't done monotubs, only trays in a pelrite tub.

Do folks here get better later flushes when a casing layer is applied?  Has anyone here done side by side comparisons with a clone-substrate with and without a casing layer applied? ~Pixie~

I have. It was done in monotubs done the exact same way. I had multiple uncased and multiple cased. Rye to straight Hpoo sub. The first flushes were identical, maybe a little better yield with the uncased. Obviously this flush came in faster with the uncased one too. Second flush for the uncased tubs were slightly lower then those in the cased ones but at this time the total of the first 2 flushes were the exact same. Also the uncased tubs had already been done with the 2nd flush a week before the cased ones. After that the uncased tubs didn't do anything worth telling about and with care and effort the cased tubs got me maybe another 15-20% of the first 2 flushes over the course of the 3rd to 5th flush. I decided that I didn't like the extra effort so now I just get 2 uncased flushes and chunk em outside and start new ones.

so. i saw someone say something earlier in thread about misting the monotub. i was under the impression that the lid stays on till fruiting. am i wrong?  i thought hte point was that the 4 holes in each side were the FAE, and the saturated/pasturized/prepared substrate and possibly casing layer is what provided the moisture, not misting

any info on this

Yes, the lid stays on until fruiting, no misting involved.

As far as the waxed paper over the sub, I believe that if you are going to apply a casing layer, its a good idea, if you are going to remain uncased, skip it. If you are going to apply a casing layer, premature pinning can result in an uncolonized casing layer, a late casing; but in an uncased tub, the premature fruits will be just quick results.
