Newb with some serious questions
    #8954908 -

Since this is my first post I would like to say "HEY!" to everyone out there.  This forum is great.  I have spent some time lurking and reading everything I could.  The FAQ and glossary is very informative.  There are some really knowledgeable people here, to say the least.  My questions are probably pretty simple but I couldnt find the answers  I was looking for, at least not in a format my simple brain could understand.

I have shroomed many times, but this is gonna be my first attempt at growing my own, Im pretty stoked about it too.  I want my first experience to be a good one so I am going to use the mad season bags.  Does anyone have any experience with these?  I was wondering about yields expected from them, quality, etc?

Another question I have is the different ways to use these bags.  Could one inject the bags wait for the bags to get ready to fruit and then open them and dump them into a terrarium to use as a FC?  Kinda like making a big cake out of it?  Would  Ineed to case this, or would it fruit ok like that?  Would I just be better off leaving it in the damn bag?  I have a 10 gallon fish tank with pump and lid with lights and everything in my garage.

Any suggestions would be great!  Also, I am an ase certified mechanic, if anyone needs any car advice, or questions answered, feel free to message me.  That way I wont feel like  i am leeching off you guys!

Do you have or can you get a Pressure Cooker?

I have no experience with purchased substrate bags.  It is very easy to make your own substrate .... whether it is BRF/verm PF cakes (that can be fruited as cakes or crumbled and cased or used as spawn to a bulk substrate), wild bird seed is easy ...etc.

If I were you, I would do some PF style cakes to get your feet wet.  You'll have 20 to 30 days while they are colonizing to plan what to do with them.  If you have a pressure cooker, you can do some WBS jars as well ....

While you are waiting for your jars to colonize you can read more and plan how you want to proceed .... you'll have close to a month.  You will learn much.

Good luck.

..... to answer another of your questions: you can do bags and fruit in them ... I have not had great success with this but other members swear by it.  This system is good if you don't have much room or don't want to call too much attention to your scene.  If you have room and the desire, FCs (fruiting chambers) are cool.  I like to fabricate and tinker ... so these are fun for me.

Main thing .... jump in ! get your feet wet.

Hey .... get RR's DVDs .... it will be the best $40 you've ever spent .... really.

I think i will get the dvds.  Would it be viable do you think colonize in these bags and then simply tear them open and sit them in a fruiting chamber?  Thats one of the ideas I was kicking around.

My wife got me a MonsterMitch bulk substrate bag for christmas last year, and that's what I did with it.  Just cut away the plastic, and plopped 'er down in the ol' shotgun FC.

Sure ..... try a bag and see how it works for you.  You'll learn something.

Many of the experienced guys use substrate bags to avoid the extra step (and time) of growing spawn then mixing the spawn with bulk substrates and colonizing that.  I haven't tried it yet .... but will at some point.

Try different things and you'll have a bunch of techniques in your 'bag of tricks'.

The DVDs will expose you to a bunch of them.

As a total noob that had a successful first grow, I'd suggest you bypass the PFTek method altogether.  It is complicated, labor intensive and involves a lot of steps.  Growbags are a lot easier and if you do a few things right, I can't see  how they can fail.  If you first order a growbag with grain and inoculate it with spores and then once it is colonized you transfer that grain to another growbag with compost in it (that's already been sterilized) then all you do is make sure the temperature is right and the bag is getting some light every day and it just happens.  You don't need special chambers, special humidity techniques and most importantly, you eliminate 95% of the possibility of contams screwing your grow.  I've found that a lot of fruits come out of the growbags and they produce 3+ flushes.  They work like a charm and are very simple and the PFTek system is not simple at all.  If you get a pressure cooker and some growbags with filter patches, you can easily prepare your growbags yourself and save money.  Believe me, growbags work, they're easy, they're cheap and they are much, much less likely to contaminate and they automatically take care of the humidity and water content issue.
