Indian Woman Convicted of Murder by Brain Scan

MUMBAI, India: The new technology is, to its critics, Orwellian. Others view it as a silver bullet against terrorism that could render waterboarding and other harsh interrogation methods obsolete. Some scientists predict the end of lying as we know it.

Now, well before any consensus on the technology's readiness, India has become the first country to convict someone of a crime relying on evidence from this controversial machine: a brain scanner that produces images of the human mind in action and is said to reveal signs that a suspect remembers details of the crime in question.

For years, scientists have peered into the brain and sought to identify deception. They have shot infrared beams through liars' heads, placed them in giant magnetic resonance imaging machines and used scanners to track their eyeballs. Since the Sept. 11 attacks, the United States has plowed money into brain-based lie detection in the hope of producing more fruitful counterterrorism investigations.

The technologies, generally regarded as promising but unproved, have yet to be widely accepted as evidence — except in India, where in recent years judges have begun to admit brain scans. But it was only in June, in a murder case in Pune, in Maharashtra State, that a judge explicitly cited a scan as proof that the suspect's brain held "experiential knowledge" about the crime that only the killer could possess, sentencing her to life in prison.

what happens when they're dealing with someone that's innocent
of the accused crime but is a pathological liar, mentally ill
or imbalanced... it's not like the machine does a playback of
the crime committed, something easy to dismiss in civilized
courts, of course in other countries they may be able to use
the fact that you had met someone 20 years before as evidence
of a crime

As for this story, really WTF, is all I can say, and Pris raises basically the same doubts I have, the same doubts anyone should have. I mean this is the brain they are trying to monitor. Not the foot. And even the human foot is incredibly complex.

Perhaps it was necessary because no one could take an Indian lawyer seriously. But no really, Legal System of India = witch hunt. I have NO idea what Asian cultures seem to have against there women.

i was saying we're all fucked in the sense that seems conceivable that one day the technology to do the brain scans would be cheap and portable.

During the routine traffic stop the cop holds a brain scanner up to your head and asks you if funding terrorists by buying drugs.

i'm not saying anytime soon, but give it 20 years.

america is so stupid, give us one more event like 9.11 and we'll allow anything in the name of national security

As much as I'm a huge fan of science and much of the new technology, I have to agree with that. And right now I'm downloading ever part of this series...

I just thought I would let everyone know about it because it looks absolutely fascinating, and it's made by Adam Curtis, who made Status Anxiety, which IMHO still is one of the best documentaries I've ever seen.:thumbup::craven:

I think within 10 hours, I downloaded around well 10 gigs or more.
My friend is a computer tech and would laugh at me, but shit I got a bunch of documentaries , books, music etc, fucking 10 gigs is a lot to me.
My 500 gig spare HD is getting pretty full though.

in the 20 or so years if that starts becoming commonplace, I'm

Anyway, I'm not American...
and I'm just a simple Canadian country mouse.
but Pris I thought "they" already did piss on your constitution,
light it on fire, and at the very least "flush" sections of it away.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the patriot act(1&2) and the victory act(1&2), passage of all those executive orders, and removal of the insurrection act,
don't all of these things violate your constitution in numerous ways already.

What I meant was the Magna Carta was one of many steps towards a more just society, in England yes, but it had effects around the world over time.
That I'm sure of. The American constitution, I'm fairly ignorant on that one.

But at least I know the Canadian charter of rights and freedoms.(Some of it, fuck I don't know it off by heart or anything)
