Question for gourmet/medical growers
    #8931309 -

Hi guys,

Im very interested in growing some shiitake and oyster mushrooms, and perhaps other ones with superb health benefits as a way to supply myself with a constant supply of healthy food... but only as a hobby though, i wouldnt really want to dedicate a whole room and have elaborate equipments to grow a farm full of these mushrooms, but merely for my own consumption.... however, seeing some of the pictures from people with their yields, it seems that the yields are not much at all in terms of quantity?!?!? or am i wrong?

anyway, i would love to hear from some of the growers.... is it easy to grow them? especially if it has to be done indoor

oh and which of the mushrooms are on the top of the health/nutritious chart? i know shiitake and oyster are very high on the list... what are some other ones?

hey guys, i'm interested in growing oyster mushroom indoor..... was wondering if anyone could show me a few good links to follow for this?

also, how much mushroom can you get from each grow? i've seen edible kits for growing mushrooms, but msot of them are very small, so you only get a little patch of mushrooms =\

i want to grow enough so i will have a steady supply of mushrooms to eat myself and for sharing with family members

Typical yields for most wood loving species are between .5 and 1.5 lbs for a 5 lb sawdust block.  If you look at that from the perspective of actual yields from plants from the amount of soil, you'll probably find you get better yields from mushrooms!

But you're right.  It can seem a bit disappointing if you're expecting a massive flush from a small block of sawdust.  Mushrooms aren't plants.  They don't pull carbon from the air to build tissue and make sugars from sunlight.  You really only get out of them what you put into them.

If you're concerned about the amount of space growing larger amounts will take up, outdoor growing is a good option.  Even in the depths of winter, enoki mushrooms will fruit!  You just need to be prepared to tie into the seasonality of various mushroom species, which is a good thing, in my opinion.
