Equipment Sterilisation.
    #893029 - 09/19/02 10:52 AM (14 years, 2 months ago)

I reuse my personal syringes, petri dishes, glass slides, etc.

I place these items in sterilisation pouches and then into my PC.

What is the recommended durration of PCing to obtain sterile instruments?

I plan on 1/2 hr @ 15 psi.

that should do it. however, i find it much easier to simply rinse with alcohol or peroxide. it works fine for me (why shouldn't it?)

30 petris, 20 slides, 10 syringes. I prefer to throw them in the PC, walk away for 30 min and come back. After I am done, I can keep the equipment sterile by leaving it in the bag until I am ready to use it.

Alcohol is noxious and I prefer not to work w/ it for extended periods, plus if doing by hand there is plenty of room for error.

I would also recommend trying sterilisation fluid.
I used to use it for my kids bottles, sterilises anything in 20 min.
Keep things sterile by simply leaving the bucket you sterilise them in closed.
Works like a charm Joshua.

Sounds like a great idea. My concern is w/ the fluid. It would be hard to get off of surfaces. I would have to dry it off, which means I would need a sterile towel of some sort. Each petri would need to be dried individually. Definitely a good idea for specific uses.

I will look into purchasing some. It would be nice to have a jar to put my scalpel in.

It is harmless.
We used to never have to worry when it came to making bottles.
When you want to use them just let them drip dry for a bit.
Any residual liquid left on the petris will not have any effect.
or for that matter on anything else you sterilised.
Take everything into your clean room, let it sit infront of the hepa for 5 minutes or so just to remove the bigger drops and you`re good to go.
Another idea would be to use a microwave steriliser also for baby products like bottles, spoones etc.
Also works really well.
That you can also just remove from the microave and leave it sealed till you want to use it.

Joshua,

I have heard great results with Chlorine Bleach and water.

Get a large-ish bucket from Orchard, fill with water. 1 oz. bleach per gallon of water... drop everything you want to be cleaned inside. let it sit for 15-30 minutes... non metals.

I use this tecnique with Home Brewing, works like a charm.
remember, non metals.

Joshua knows exactly what he`s doing.
I think he was merely finding an alternate route. From personal expereince as well you soon realise that a wack of petris and jars and any other tools needing sterilisation can become too much.
When I sterilise my jars I need a large bath filled with water and bleach and then soak the 30 jars in the water.
After a while it`s just too much effort.

I find it strange that my posted question was "What is the recommended durration of PCing to obtain sterile instruments? "but yet nobody has addressed the actual question at hand.

I can understand that people want to offer their methods, but for no one to actually suggest a durration....that's wierd.

I do appreciate the generous suggestions though...

I PC for 30 minutes at 15 lbs. and it works well. I also use alcohol to sterilize non-porous items on the fly. Hope that helps.

attitude
30 minutes will be a ok.
in fact joshua, a maximum of 20 minutes at pressure is necessary.
Seeing as only 20 minutes std boiling is necessary you could probably reduce that to 15 minutes.
Make it 25 to be safe.
