Hygrometers
    #891864 - 09/18/02 06:34 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

I've been searching around for hygrometers. I really dont want to pay 50 bucks for a single hygrometer. Do any of you know any generic places, like homedepot or something that have cheap hygrometers that are still accurate? thanks

I was thinking about buying one as well, but its really unncessary... As long as the walls of your terrarium have a little condensation (assuming you are casing) you should be fine-- don't bother with the cheap plastic ones, and even some of the higher priced electric ones still aren't very reliable.

Buy one and then calibrate it. Here's the FAQ entry:Please try reading the FAQ next time. Thanks.

I dont want to know how to calibrate one. I want to know where you can find cheap but reliable hygrometers brands.

For the most part, you will want to check the accuracy of any cheap hygrometer you buy.

BTW, I was only commenting on checking the FAQ because you constantly ask the most ludicrous questions I have ever seen!  I'm suprised your post count hasn't exceeded Moe's, and almost all of the questions you post could easily be answered after reading the FAQ if one possessed common sense...  Take one for the team and RTFM..

Thanks!

I dont take offense. I just wanted to know where i could find a reliable hygrometer that was cheap from the people who HAVE more EXPERIENCE than I do.

Your choices will be limited if you want a cheap one. Personally, I use a digital one and it works relatively well. My advice would be to avoid the cheap, analog hygrometers, I've read a few bad reports concerning that variety.

Thank you. Im concerned with humidity because Im using perlite. When I open the lid it feels humid, but I live in a dry state, so I dont know what humidity is. I just want to make sure Im doing what i need to concerning humidity in a terr. We get like 2 % RH here. thx.

If you're using moist perlite and PF cakes, I wouldn't worry about buying a hygrometer.

Because, when the lid of your fruiting chamber is on tight, the perlite will aid in evaporating water into the air. This will gradually raise the humidity to 100%. This is why.

If you had read the FAQ (doh!) then you would have found these tips:

Edit: Fixed the link. For some reason, when posting, it appended an extra "http:" to the url...

A good hydromitor will pay for itself when ya move onto casings. The more expencive they are, the closer and more accurate the readings. The cheaper they are, the more they act like a hunk of missleading plastic.

Raido shack puts out good hydro/thermo gauges from $25-$35. (The ones with the radio hand units are a godsend for the lazy man)

yea, soaked perlite can keep a terrerium at 99% or over for (im not kidding you) months...
i found hygrometers that actually worked great for about 12 bucks (digital temp and hygrometer) at Target.

This looks like a job for me,so everybody just follow me over to wal-mar to get the 15.00 hygro meter with several options it looks like this ok. Now get off your lazy ass an go buy one, if your using perlite remember to add ice in a ziplock everyday to keep temps and humidity around 90%. Spray lisol to be extrasafe.

Acu-Rite?s are pieces of shit imho. The one I got from Wal-Mart is only good for taking temp readings(even that is off 1-2 deg.) The Hygrometer is not accurate and has trouble operating in high humidity spaces ie... fruiting chambers. Save yourself money in the long run and go ahead and get a nice one, you?ll be glad you did. I got one from a hydroponics shop in my area(made in Germany) and I am very pleased with its performance/accuracy. It was $38. Here?s a pic........
