Didgeridoo - help me please... some questions
    #8836249 -

Hey shroomery... so I borrowed my roommates didgeridoo the other day, been trying to get it to get that classic didgeridoo sound but I cannot.

I dont really want to blame that didgeridoo but I was wondering if its a good didgeridoo or a crappy one that just looks like a good decoration.

What do you guys think from looking at the pictures?

My impressions are that I thought the inner surface was supposed to be more smooth? Also, is that interior blockage (appears to be frayed wood or something) supposed to be in there? (thought it was supposed to be totally open, but what do i know).

Let me know, I am a didgeridoo noob.

Thanks

That is a good Didj for sure.

there is usually a wax coating on the inside of the mouth piece.

if it was cheap it would be made of PVC or bamboo.

But it is most likely user error.

put your lips in the area in the pic you posted, use the tips of your lips and vibrate them in the little hole. Ive seen several types of these.

Thanks for the replies guys. Weiiii, the close up picture is of the larger end, cant really play that end.

I have an idea of how to play it, I get it sorta close to the classic didj sound, however not good enough.

So that blockage in the middle is there for a reason eh.

Thanks again.

Oh and whats the benefit of a wax mouth piece?

try to buzz your lips in that hole.... like a tuba player... depending on how hard you blow... how flappy your lips are... you'll get different sounds... just make your lips buzz...

and i'm sure googling some tips could probly help...

You have to buzz your lips, but the trick is the amount of pressure you place with your cheek and mouth.

Also, don't use the middle of your mouth, pick a side and blow out that.  Much easier.

The blowing out the side seems easier to get close to that Australian sound. Thanks.

Circular breathing, that sounds hard :stoned:

thats an extremely nice didj.  btw that 80% blockage is for back pressure.  it would take a lot of air to blow thru that, they put those blocks for airflow.

if you want to learn a little easier, make one out of PVC, they are a lot easier to learn how to blow on and if you get the right length, it will be in the right key.

check out some of those vids, they should help a lot about mouth position and making sounds.  also don't be afraid to use your voice to manipulate the sound, you can get some really cool squeals and calls if you do it right.

Just learn some technique and get some practice. This thread reminds me of a funny story.

Last year I sat in with my friend's band at a bar near his college. We had a party at his apartment after the gig and one of his roommates picked up my guitar (I was sitting on the couch with some guys and he didn't know it was my guitar). He fumbled around on it for a couple of minutes, making all kinds of scratching screeching noises. Then he put it down and said "this guitar is a piece of shit".

The kid only knew like three chords and had clearly never played an amplified electric guitar before.  Of course I had to be a dick and pick it up, pull out a fat juicy lick and make some sarcastic comment like "maybe you're doing something wrong, it sounds alright to me."  I was just fucking around though, we all had a good lol.

Some advice:  The back pressure on that didg is likely going to make it more difficult to play than some other designs.  To play it, pretend like you are blowing a raspberry on someone's stomach, tighten the corners of your mouth slightly, lips still real loose, and angle the motion more towards the side of your mouth rather than the middle.  After you get that down, try it with the didg and maintain the vibrations of your lips to a constant, if possible.  After messing with it for a while you should get the hang of it.
