please help identify

Habitat: was growing in soil in a flower pot in the backyard of texas.

Gills: white, not attached

Stem: thin stem with brown base and white near the cap

Cap: 2.5 inches in diameter, white with brown center and brown specks around (see image), sphereical, concave(it dips inwards so it could hold water)

Spore print color: brown(maybe light brown or brown with a tinge of yellow)

Bruising:
pink/red that later turned brown

Other information:the mushroom is very fleshy and flexible. the stem was tougher than the cap

hmmm...what do you mean potentially poisonous? and it doesn't look like any images of any other lepiota that i found...

it means some lepiotas are poisonous. therefore because this is a certain species of lepiota it could be poisonous. and i also think it looks like a lepiota.

okay thank you. i'm sorry i was doubtful, i am new to mushroom identification. i guess i won't be cooking this up with my steak and onions...

Yours actually look like textbook lepiotas. Look up some pics of l. cristata, for example, which is possibly what you have there.

Yea, Lepoita for sure. Either L. cristata, or L. clypeolaria is my guess

L. cristata it is! it looks the same as in the pics i found on wikipedia i think...

oh and ya i'd bet it's poisonous. i had a nibble and my arms started burning...but it was the tiniest of nibbles :frown:

The nibbling-arm burning relationship sounds highly psychosomatic to me, but these are not a good meal in any case.

I wondered if that might be a highly psychosomatic reaction.  I often get butterflies in my stomach just finding a large morel, let alone tasting it.  I've tried to find that reaction in field guides, but apparently it is rare. :wink:

I had a similar reaction to dried and rehydrated chanterelles from the store (first time having them). However, I've since been able to devour fresh chanterelles without any problems, so I suspect it was all in my head.
