Need to Confirm ID on Bolete / Chanterelle
    #8802344 - 08/20/08 09:00 PM (9 years, 6 months ago)

First of all...

Does that look like a chanterelle to you?  It was growing under an oak, but has no distinctive aroma when cut.  I only found the one, and some tiny ones in scattered places.

And now, the ID...

Habitat: Suburban lawns, under ash trees (and possibly a pine).  Seas of them.  Hundreds.  My God, it's full of... mushrooms.

Gills: Pores, yellow.

Stem: Lateral, tapered stem, usually less than 1" long and 1/2" wide at the base.

Cap: Largest sample is a little over 5" across, most found are much smaller.

Spore print color: No print as of yet, still a-printin'.

Bruising: Older specimens bruise faintly blue-green.

Other information: Smells a bit earthy, but not distinctive.  Taste not distinctive.  Pores run along stem.  Grows in small but scattered clusters.  Young specimens are a bit slimy when wet.

Images:

I am thinking it is the "Ash Bolete," (Gyrodon
merulioides
) considering it is growing under ash trees.  Are they any good?  I want to make spaghetti.

Yep, they are chanterelles and the ID on the bolete is correct, it is Ash Tree Bolete.  The Ash Tree Boletes don't have much texture or much taste. Might be good though, if you use young ones.

First one is a smooth chanterelle.

Oh my God!  My first secret chanterelle spot.

You will never know where it is.  Do not ask.  I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you.

That's the correct attitude, isn't it?

No.  Here we share all our secret spots.

Please PM me with it and directions.

Thanks.

Just the other day I found tons of Panaeolus subbalteatus at the corner of Walk and Don't Walk.

Okay, I found the chanterelles in the front yard of the confused hispanic lady who speaks no English.  You know, it's true.  It really IS easier to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission, especially with a language barrier.
