American Gods

Just heard...Neil Gaiman won the Hugo Award for 'American Gods'. Highly recomended if you like anthropomorphic personifications, the relative natures of reality and belief, and more mythology than you can shake a log at. It's kind of like Clive Barker, but not so British and with a better sense of humor.

I am a absentee fan of gaiman. I was weened on his Sandman comix, and then discovered his Novels.I ihave a few, and always wondered why he had not received awards for his incredible talent.
I will try to obtain a copy of this work, as soon as possible. Thanks!

Yeah, it's good. While on a Gaiman kick, I read American Gods, Neverwhere, Stardust, and the entire Sandman series (I think that's all of it)... I can't say which I liked the best, but I can say that Stardust is at the bottom of my list. It was cool, especially farther in, but I didn't have as much fun with it as the others.
But that's got nothing to do with this thread, does it...

American Gods is thoroughly entertaining and interesting: great premise backed up with a very cool cast of characters (some familiar faces to Sandman readers).
The sexuality in American Gods seemed to me a fair bit more graphic than the works previously mentioned. I recall finding it somehow annoyingly gratuitous and shallow, though I'm not exactly sure why. Whatever the reason, it's the only problem I remember having with the book.

I haven't read any other Gaiman stuff besides Sandman and Good Omens (also recommended), but I think he was aiming at a particularly American audience with American Gods. Not just because its a huge book market, but...well, look at the title, right? Maybe gratuitous sex goes hand in hand with the American mystique. Or maybe it WAS all about the money, and Gaiman just wanted to hook a more mainstream audience than he ever had previously.

I had intended to make a Gaiman post at some point, you beat me to it

Gaiman has been a favorite author of mine for many years. I just turned a friend on to this book. Gaiman has a new book out called Coraline, written for young adults, but Im sure anyone would enjoy it as much as his other novels.
