PF Stropharia, anyone else tried these?
    #876715 - 09/11/02 05:12 AM (21 years, 6 months ago)

Okay, I obviously don't have enough experience with mushrooms, these look like other strains I have seen pics of. I am on my first attempt with this strain, I have two cakes and the other 4 are in casings in a terrarium.

I patched the initial mycelial growth and have an even pinset. The pins came in at the same time but none of them are growing at the same pace.

The cakes are doing 'okay' Something about this strain I have noticed is on the cakes, the abhorts are easy to spot, they darken up pretty well.

Anyone else growing, or have grown these? I would like to hear your experiences.
Thanks

Great pinner, grows super fast overnight, hollow and slender stems.

I have found they grow much more during the darker hours and when its cooler, even cooler than normal fruiting conditions, what say you?

What a fun strain, thanks for the info, any other tips or experiences?

Pretty fast maturer   They pop up quick, but my dog's have had wimpy little stems and overall small fruit  .  Anyone else had this experience?  BTW-  These are PF cakes cased with a 50/50 mix of Scott's 3-n-1 and verm.  No contam problems yet

Why don't you go develop your own strains instead of stealing from all the other vendors?

Do you think pf developed that strain so YOU could make money of it?

Why don't you stop riding on the coattails and work of others and do something yourself istead of jsut filling this forum with spam!

my experience was similar, hollow stems with little weight/
a prolific fruiter, though.

Yeah, they pop up like overnight. I have had them go from pins about 1 1/2" in the evening to becoming 3-4" tall with upturned caps by the next day (late morning), with some even sporulating! Subsequent flusher come fast also.

Actually, according to PF's site, he did not develop the strain. From his site:
The origin of the PF Stropharia

At this moment there are two versions of the story. According to my notes the PF Stropharia was born in January 1997. It came up in a jar of PF Substrate which was gamma ray sterilized instead of steam sterilized. The difference between cold and hot sterilization is that in cold sterilizations (with gamma flash) the substrate remains raw. The mycelia have a slight difficulty in colonizing it and pinning is delayed. This is not an advantage so I terminated the gamma flash experiments, but according to my notes the PF Stropharia came up from one of those jars - from PF Classic spores obtained from PF in 1995.
But as anyone can see, the PF Stropharia looks very different from the PF Classic. It has scales on the cap while the PF Classic is smooth. It has a ring around the stem, the mycelium is much denser. It doesn't look like a PF Classic offspring at all.

So PF's explanation of this that I made a mistake. That the PF Stropharia is a genotype I received from someone else and that I mislabeled the jars.

When I look at the mushroom I would say that PF is right. His explanation is the most simple one and in science the simplest explanations are usually right. The Stropharia is too different from the Classic to be offspring. But at the same time this explanation is difficult fo me to accept because I didn't have so many different cubies back then. I had only 2 cubies which liked PF Substrate (the PF classic and the 'Amazonian' from the Hawaiian vendor Pacific Exotic Spora which PF now distributes under the name 'Hawaiian'). So if I mislableled the jar then still the origin of the PF Stropharia is a mystery.
Peace

So far I am impressed with how much it pins, but yes, it does seem to have very narrow stems and the bigger ones are hollow.

But a fun strain to watch. Brewin a batch of PR's right now. From what I have read, those are a handful.

thanks
