Can spores be directly injected into potting soil? * 1

Can spores be directly injected into potting soil?

In nature, the shrooms drop their spores and they sink into the soil or manue and sprout from there, so if I empty the syringe of spores into soil, will that work or not? another thing, why does everyone use 1/2 pint jars? why will a pint or some other size not work? is there something special that the shrooms "know"

Potting soil is fine for casing but won't colonise by itself.

People do use Pint jars too, along with alot of other things... Half pint are just real common, and they will colonize faster, etc. Spores in soil wont break past the initial stage into mycelium, they need a more nutrient rich enviroment to do so(jars) but once the mycelium network is established, it would be easier for it to take control.

i read plenty about culivation so just have a few more questions:

how does a 1/2 pint jar speed up colonization as opposited to larger jars? can cups be used also must the lid be closed tightly for a few days? then ill need jars. I have a few extra jars but one of them is 46 ounces. will that do for *large* amounts of shrooms? so what is exactly the first step?

1. find a jar, preferabily a half pint
2. add boiling water to jar then add cooked white rice to it.
3. add a few CC of spores from a syringe
4. what now?

Nothing is sped up per se. The reason 1/2 pints are colonized faster is related to the volume of substrate to be colonized. This is why it takes longer to fill up a 1 gallon jug compared to a 1/2 gallon jug when the flow rate of the water filling the jugs is equal. Understand?

Cups that will not melt during steaming or in the PC may be used. Make sure they are tapered so you can get the cake out without destroying it. Use foil to seal the top.

Don't waste your time. It will take forever to colonze. If you have a PC, maybe use it for shakeable grains.

I get it. Im using the same analogy for bacteria colonization in a petrii dish with some nutritionous gel at the bottom and a week later there were patches of fuzz were the bacteria was applied. still, wont you get more shrooms if more substrate is colonized?

I doubt any drinking cups would melt from boiling water, since some people put coffee in them. tapered? most cups are tapered slightly outwards with the bottom narrow and the top wider.

how long is that? a month? I could use different sized jars for rotation to ensure a constant supply of shrooms :laugh:

You can't inject them spores into potting soil cuz there's nothing nutritious for the spores to eat. The reason 1/2 pints are 'faster' is because you dont take it out until the mycelium covers the whole thing keeping contams at bay. If you used a gallon full of sustrate youd have to wait for the myc. to cover the entier thing before using it.
