hey guys. my friend has been cultivating on and off for a few years now. he uses shroom wizard's tek, but knows that it isnt all that great. through many failures he has learned to tweak certain parts of it so as to bypass the contamination that seems to be such a big problem with it. well just recently he has made two casings, and they seem to be doing fine. now, normally when he got to this part he would start getting all excited (and impatient) and fuck around with the casing. he would stick his bare (often unwashed) hands into it, hold it up to his face so he was breathing directly into it, and do other obviously unsanitary things. well through experience (and research) he has learned what not to do to avoid these things. however, he knows that cAsing layers such as peat moss, pure vermiculite, dung, etc., are much more desirable for various reasons - but is potting soil a bad casing layer? i seldom/never hear it mentioned on this board. i remember in the past hearing it is more prone to contamination than most casing layers, but does this have to be a problem? will proper sterilization techniques overcome this? the potting soil itself was not sterilized before casing. however, in the past he never sterilized it and often got very nice casings before he started fuckign with it and basically induced contamination. so what i'm asking is, is potting soil a BAD casing layer? contamination aside - does it produce lower yields, slower production, etc?? thank you for any feedback

why use an adequate casing material when you can grow super shrooms with coir/verm or 50/50?

I have used various casing materials (vermiculite, coir, 50/50 and 50/50+) and i still sometimes use soil, although mixed 1/3 or 1/2 with vermiculite. Be sure to separate sticks, twigs or any other big particles.

Depends on the potting soil.
It's greatly inconsistent. Wich is my problem with it.
Get a sealed bag of " Shultz " or any reputable brand " Pro-Mix.. " and PC it , i see no problems with it . Done it before, both un-Pc'ed and PC'ed.. and un-pc"ed sucked as it contamed after my 1st flush. PC'ed , , made no diff.
As long as it retains water and has very little or no nutrients. = golden.
I now use 75% verm and 25% potting soil ( soil for color, as you can see a difference when it dries out.. that's all. ).. and of course.. PC it every time.
good luck.
(* potency and yield would be a factor of what's underneath ( poop. straw. .. . .) and growing conditions., not casing layer related in my 0.02 )
