Prospective cultivator, question on casing vs. cakes
    #8726554 -

Hey guys, I've been considering growing shrooms for a while now and got very serious about it 2 weeks ago. I researched tons of BR/verm tecs and the almighty pf tek, I even got the psilocybin mushroom handbook for growers.

Originally I had intended on just sticking with cakes. Getting a small terrarium and doing like 6-12 cakes and seeing how it went from there. With more and more meticulous research , however, I feel like I have another choice available.

From the start I knew I'd love doing these experiments. I just didn't know if I ever wanted to bulk grow. Now I'm positive I want to bulk grow, but everyone seems to think that total newbs need to stick with rice cakes.

I'm a pretty meticulous person, and after reading through so much information I think that I might be able to handle a casing. Or maybe combine a casing with the rice cakes.

I don't want to spend money on cake materials and then end up not having enough space in the terrarium for bulk growing or wasting time with small yields when I know I'm going to eventually want big delicious yields.

What do you guys think? What was the most difficult step in casing vs. rice cakes? Is contamination a whole nother clusterfuck over a 100% colonized rice cake where it's not as much of an issue past inoculation? Am I being "over his head noob" here, and should just shut up and stick to cakes?

Any information would be excellent

edit: to include that I will be using a pressure cooker, not boiling.

There is nothing "harder" about growing bulk.

Its just a bit more work and quite a bit more room for error.

If you want to try spawning to bulk, DO IT! But have some cakes just in case the bulk goes south.

I'd go with a casing.

I started my first grow PF tek style. I have 4 cakes fruiting at the moment, and I have 7 fully colonized jars I haven't birthed yet. If I had the time to do a casing/bulk grow, i'd crumble the rest of those cakes and case them. The only problem is that I have to finish by august 25th because i'm leaving and that won't give me enough time.

Heh, I have the opposite problem. I'm leaving to go to back up to school soon and I want to have it ALL figured out by the time I get back to my apartment.

I'd do bulk sub but keep a few jars for a straight grain casing so you can see the whole grow cycle while waiting for the bulk to colonise. Casings are more forgiving about stuff like RH. Maybe try a few bucket-style monotubs so you don't have all your eggs in one basket, so to speak.

Layer your spawn into a nice mix of substrates, being careful to hydrate to perfect field capacity. Skip the casing layer for your first grow.  I did this same thing in two six quart trays in a 36gallon perlite tub and got right around five dry ounces from my first grow.

Again this was without a casing layer, and without ever having done cakes. PM me if you want some help searching the forums for good information.  I am not an expert, but, like you I was meticulous in my studies and was blown away by what I achieved from my first grow. Best of luck, you'll love this hobby. :sun: ~Pixie~

You guys are great with the fast responses.

Yeah, I think I'm definitely leaning heavily towards a casing at the very least.

Psuper, I think I'll take you up on that

Yeah its great to go straight to bulk your first grow, I wish I could but I just don't have the time.

Yeah these guys are great i'm a noob always asking lame questions and I always get a quick answer. the shroomery

My first try was WBS. No contaminates, no mycelium.

My second try was WBS, (from a SITE sponsored vendor), nice mycelium, failed to poke holes in cooling Pasteurization bag o'poo. Contaminate city. Talk about a stink. But I saved the mycelium with a successful G2G!

Third attempt, Spawned G2's to bulk and also did a G2G in five WBS jars. Lost one jar to lipstick. Still have four pints for bulk when they're ready AND my two trays are showing signs of a good mycelium run. I spawned two days ago.

I'm not celebrating yet, but I feel good about everything so far.

Never tried cakes. It's true, if I had, I'd have probably harvested some mushrooms by now, but my shotgun isn't going anywhere and there's always tomorrow! :goodluck:

Is WBS or Rye better than BRF/Verm cakes for a 50/50 casing setup?

Depends on what you consider better.

BRF has more nutrients per gram than WBS or rye.

But the grain works much nicer for spawning to bulk trays.

Honestly, you can case with crumbled BRF cakes using the same materials you would for the PF Tek - just purchasing casing material. I started off with the PF Tek and did 6 jars - I'm in the process of graduating up to multiple casing at the moment, and after that (or even before, if I get impatient) will be moving on to rye when my pressure cookers comes this week.

I got about 1/2 - 3/4 oz dry total off the six cakes, so it was a good learning experience. Personally, I would recommend starting off with cakes - if you follow the teks to a 'T', you're pretty unlikely to fail (ESPECIALLY if you invest $10 in a home made glove box). There's a lot more variables involved when you do a casing, and (at least with me) all the reading and studying in the world doesn't really prepare you for when it's show time. With more variables comes more chances for failure and it can end up being incredibly frustrating if you're just starting out.

Some people will say go ahead and start with bulk, but I say - what's the rush?

Either way, definitely check out RR's videos on Youtube or order the DVDs. It's a big help.

I've never tried rye berries, but I've heard that they were the shit. I've been using WBS because, at first it was just easy to get, then I had such great success that I said, "What the hell, might as well!".

I think that the advantage of the grains, (WBS or rye), is that they break apart nicely when you spawn to your bulk. When you take a fully colonized grain jar and remove the spawn, it feels like a very fragile piece of rubber. When you crumble it, it kind of falls apart pretty easily.

On the other hand, (and this is just guesswork here), I would think that the flour and verm mixture is more dense and not as easy to break into the desired pieces. Again, haven't tried it yet.

Well, from what I've read, rye/WBS is so much better because it colonizes a lot faster than BRF cakes, since each berry/kernel acts as an inoculation site. Since it colonizes faster, it's better for spawn, I'm guessing.
