ID request - North England (Cumbria)

Hi everybody,

I have finally found something on the fells on West Cumbria that is not (or at least, I think is not) Macrocystidia cucumis. ()

Habitat:
Growing out of soil in a rather boggy cow field

Gills:
browny/creamy/white

Stem:
8cm/3in.

yellowy browny whiteish

hollow

Cap:
2cm/almost 1 inch across

Location: West Cumbria, England

I hope the photos help.

**On a different subject, I also saw some mushrooms growing out of sheep faeces. Can this species be indentified simply from the fact that it was growing out of such material or do lots of species grow from faeces?**

This one will be hard to put a name on without knowing the spore print color.  It looks like it was picked when the gills aren't quite mature so we don't know what color the spores will be and it may not have dropped a print for that reason.

How do we know this (so I know for next time)?

I'll leave the print over night and see if I have any luck.

Look for specimens in the area that are more mature.  Also, most mushrooms do not have such a convex cap when mature.

Turns out the print was actually quite thick. It is a chocolate brown colour. Here it is, printed onto white paper:

It could be an Agrocybe.

Yeah, thanks Alan. Looks likely. I've read some (amusing) stuff on mushroomexpert.com (pasted below) and everything adds up. Even one of the photos on the website looks the same.

"The mushrooms in Agrocybe have brown spore prints and are small to medium-sized, saprobic species that grow in grass, wood chips, dung, garden mulch, or in woods--either terrestrially, or from deadwood. They are not subject to rapid decay (in contrast to the mushrooms in Bolbitius), and the caps, with a few exceptions, are dry. Unlike species of Conocybe, Agrocybe species have convex to flat caps.

In my area (central Illinois) May and June are the months for most Agrocybe species, and the little mushrooms proliferate in urban settings and along country roads in ditches and fields. There's no stopping them--but, after the first or second excited Agrocybe stop of the year, there's no stopping for me, either. The truth is, they're boring, and if you want to identify many of them with certainty you might as well get your javelin and head for the nearest windmill."
