building a new bass
    #8570364 -

hi all, i am thinking about building an electric bass to honor this website. it's been such a large part of my life. i am looking for submissions on a body and headstock design. go crazy with the mushroom/shroomery theme. try to keep the design to body shape and not just something inlaid into a standard shaped body.

t'll be a 5 string fretted neck through bass. i will be building everything except the bridge, pots, and tuners, though i may build the bridge... i havent decided. i will be building the pickups from scratch, though i havent decided how many or whether they will be humbuckers. it will be a j-bass setup, though.

maybe when i'm done we can figure out something cool to do with the bass

thanks,
auto

Are you going to build the string trees and input jack too?

You should incorporate the knobs (and the string/pickup covers if you go for that) into the design somehow.  And shrooms for inlays!

no string trees on a bass with a slanted headstock.

i'll use a switchcraft jack.

shroom inlays, done

i'll post a step by step of how i build it if ya'll want me to

after I read the first post again, I was wondering what the advantage is of making pickups from scratch yourself in tsead of buying good ones?

How about a headstock kinda like ovation guitars have? (kinda shroom like shape, know what I mean?) and maybe that kind of shape with a shroom like woodcarving like this one (only with a shroom)http://www.adamasguitars.com/img/customshop/headstock.jpg

will think about body shape too

ok, started design process. i'm going to do a step by step of every part of the build process, from design on paper to the setup of the finished bass. here goes.

I start off by taking apart an instrument I already own. Basically I am just looking for a rough shape. I use a big piece of thick paper, a pencil, and a tape measure.

I mark the center line of the paper and set the body of the instrument I already have on center. Then I trace it.

I have decided to make this a 36" scale neck because I am 6'4" and the regular 34" Fender scale length always feels a bit short for me. So I put a line where I want the bridge and measure 18" to find out where the 12th fret will be.

Next thing I do is make a spacer that will show the space I like between my J style pickups. I do this so I know how thin I can get on the body in terms of how narrow it can be without getting into the routed cavities for the pickups. The pickups will be at either edge of this spacer adding an inch to it. I make this spacer so I can move it around as I draw to find the best shape for the body.

I go ahead and extend down the neck lines to where the 26th fret will be. I will be making a 24 fret neck, but I want to be able to reach all of them. So now I that I have my center line, 12th fret and bridge marked, and my pickup spacer, I am ready to start.

I decide where to start the cut-away for the fretting hand. I have also decided to make this a single cut-away neck. I dunno why, but I dig them and I don't think enough basses are made that way. I will attach the top part of the body to the 12th fret. I do this so there won't be any neck dive. For those that don't know, neck dive is when the headstock of a bass moves down when you don't hold the neck up. It happens because the bass is unbalanced. I also mark off on my spacer how big the pickup routes will be. Now that I have where my cut-aways will be, I go ahead and draw out where I want my pickups.

I shape the left side (top half) of the body. Lots of lead and eraser are used. I want sort of a slanted feel between the top of the (non)cut-away and where the knobs would be. More on the missing knobs later in the build, but let me tel you... it is awesome. I also like a high-ish forearm rest because that is where my arm goes when I play.

TAH-DAHHHHHHHHHH. This is close to the final shape of the bass. I really dig the narrow, sweeping body. It has a sense of movement. Adrug has designed an awesome mushroom inlay pattern I will inlay with abalone shell. I'll try to get a pick of that up soon.

So what do ya'll think?

OK, I worked out the fingerboard dimensions. I changed the scale length from 36" to 35" and decided to go with a bolt on neck. There is a very good reason for this. Stay tuned to find out why.

Here's a pic of the fingerboard and the body together. There isn't a head stock design yet. When I figure that out, I'll post a pic of that too.
