Sweaty cakes need attention?
    #868058 - 09/06/02 11:58 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I birthed 4 cakes a few days ago into a small terrarium that uses perlite for humidification.  A few days ago I noticed small beads of water forming on the cakes.  I know it's not dripping down from the top so I think water is condensing directly onto the cakes somehow.  My radioshack hygrometer reads 77 degrees and 93% rh.  Should I daub off this excess water with a sterile tissue or just let it sit.  Could this possibly inhibit pin formation? The strain is stropharia (matias romero I believe) if that makes any difference  :smirk:

I thought cakes are suppose to be at 99% humidity? Maby it is that high but your hygrometer is wrong and that could be causing the problem. I believe 93 is good for casings but I didnt really ever do cakes.

Ok, so then I shouldn't bother daubing off the excess water. I thought I read somewhere that water can hinder mycelial network formation...then again, I suppose patting the cakes with a tissue might do that too.
