It's a solar farm. It's pretty much the same concept of collecting rays and focusing them to a single point, except multiplied by about 1000 times.

The difference is that they focused the beam more, which ok, it might have a couple uses, but meh

I agree. Not that its useless, it is great that they are doing this. But its just an incremental step of a technology that already exists. (as pictured above)

I like this pic from the wiki article above. Mostly because it's listed as being built in 1901 :eek:

It was used to run a motor.
