Well- here's my problem with this- cakes are more likely to contaminate then other growing mediums- for instance, grain more or less is fairly resistant to contams once colonized- while on the other hand a cake once colonized contains micro-porous slots in the vermiculite. These are PERFECT places for mold spores to wipe off your hands and germinate. So if it were me designing a single purpose fruiting container it would just be the good ole' method in Psilocybin: Magic Mushroom Grower's Handbook (heh I think I'm kinda tired right now) colonize the cup of rye- throw some peat with the pH balanced on it- and wala- fruiting. You can innoculate rye grain with spore water- works fine. I've done it many times. Well just my two cents- I think cakes are over rated- easy to colonize- but hell I like when I can take a piss in my terrarium without ill effects. Fruiting chambers are like never sterile outside of cake cultivation. So why spend all the money doing cakes? (pls the larger of a jar you work with the less time you spend innoculating/shaking the same amount of substrate). Well- lets just say this species REQUIRED manure (heh I should go read) I'm pretty sure you could add like 15-25% manure to the rye grain without ill effects.

I never had problems with vermiculite, but mixing maure with rye sounds cool too....
I'll give both a try...
the advantage of the HorseShit/BrF/verm is that it is so easy to get the right moist content, not to forget the dry verm layer (OK, filter disks and RYE are superior) and it is tek most people know, they just have to add one cup less verm and one dried shit and they can grow the real magic...
BTW my terrarium isn't sterile, infact it is even quite dirty at the moment :wink:....
I like RYE/BirDSEED/BRF/VErM/Quinoa/Shit combos just to have all the good inside :smile:

Ripper, probably i didn't explain very good as my english isn't very good :wink:
When the jars are colonized, and i'm not talking about PF style jars, you keep the substrate into them, only scrape out the verm layer and put some 50/50+ as a casing layer, then fruit in the normal way....
For what i have seen around a very deep substrate gives a very abundant crop...
Also oriental growers insert into the jar's mouth a cylinder of paper to increase CO2 , so the mushroom tend to grow longer, in search of fresh air....
This way maybe can increase the total mass of the stems (more mass, more high :biggrin:).

I just prepared a honey jar.....
tomorrow i'll start experimenting with Ryche's pantrops....wish me luck!
